Dear Dr. Kehoe, On Friday October 8th, we received a call from the Standard Oil office in Atlanta advising us that they had had a report that a tank containing Crown Ethyl Gasoline, located in a dealer station at Daisy, Georgia, had developed a leak :: that permitted the gasoline to run into a well from which water was being supplied for drinking purposes. Their information indicated that water from this well was being pumped by means of an electric pump from a point somewhaer near the bottom of the well; and that while the yrater had acquired a rather pe culiar taste, it was nevertheless used for some time before the fact was discovered that the gasoline was seaping into it. The Standard Oil people seemed to be somewhat concerned lest some of the lead which was in the gasoline might have been absorbed in the water, and asked us to investigate. 'While it is our understanding that this was most unlikely, we felt that to be safe, we would have samples of the well water picked up and sent to your laboratory for analysis. So far, no one has been reported as being ill from drinking the water, and while Mr. :5o0ooley was there, he made the suggestion that the well be abandoned and filled in. He was assured this would be done and that the people who owned the well would make other arrangements for obtaining drinking water. If you see fit to test the samples which Mr. McCooley has already forwarded to you, we would appreciate a report in order that we can advise the Standard Oil Company here in Atlanta.
