Box 58009 Houston, Texas Dear Mr, Corly: Based on our telephone conversation with Mr. Morton of your New York office, we arc forwarding to you, via KEA air express, two (2) samples of VAcM. We certainly appreciate your cooperation in analyzing these samples. As mentioned to Mr. Morton, we are interested in the levels of the aldehydes as well as the amount of hydroquinone and the acidity of the samples. Should you have any questions, please feel free to con tact me. Thanks again for your cooperation* Very truly yours TENNECO PLASTICS DIVISION Tenneco Chemicals, Inc. FWK/Jt cc: H.B. Carr P.W. QUALITY CONTROL TESTING METHOD DATE: September, 3.971 METHOD NO,: 2-3 TITLE: Contamination Using Syntron Vibrator SCOPE: This test has been designed to determine the con tamination level in resins and raw materials. The contamination may appear as dark specks or other foreign contaminants. A count of the specks is made as the resin or raw material flows down a Syntron vibrator chute. A magnet is placed at the end of the Syntron chute to collect ferro magnetic particles. The ferro magnetic particles adhering to paper-covered shim stock seated against the mag netic poles are counted. APPARATUS: 1. Syntron Vibra Flow Feeder (Model F-T01A, Syn tron Co., Homer City, Pa.) with gate installed in the vibrator, 6 inches from the back and 0.017 inch clearance. 2. Magnet (Cat. JO, 8l0, Edmund Scientific, Inc.., Barrington, N.J. 08007). 3. Lamp (Burton Model 1300) or equivalent. 4. Balance, with a readout to +0.1 gm. 5. Paper, light blue. CHEMICALS: Resin or raw material to be tested. PROCEDURE: 1. In a dirt- and dust-free area, set up the Syn tron and the light source on a firm level table. 2. The gate of the chute of the vibrator shoul.d be 6 inches from back side of inclined vibrator end. (This enables the total resin to be added all at once.) 3- The gate must be set with a feeler gauge to 0.03.7 inch clearance, which is equivalent to a COLORITE 014299 METHOD NUMBER 2-3 REPORT: ^10 mesh screen size. (if adjustments are needed, the lab supervisor must be notified.) ^. Weigh individually 100 grams of. sample for the visual contamination chock and one-pound sample for the ferro magnetic chock. Perform each test by separately pouring the samples into.the chute. Note: Make sure the paper on the magnet is cleaned of magnetic particles between each run. 5. Place a container at the end of the Syntron to catch the sample flowing down the vibrator, 6. Turn on the vibrator, 7. As the material vibrates down the chute, make a count of all contamination particles. Check the magnet for ferro magnetic contamination and take a count. Note: A small screw driver may be used to as sist in counting and confirming the ferro magnetic nature of the particles adhering to the magnet. This is accomplished by approaching the contaminant in question and if it Is ferro magnetic It will be at tracted by the screw driver. Number of total contamination over magnetic count. Example: 5 total contaminants counted, of which 2 were found on the magnet: report as fol lows: 5/2. Attachment. H.B.
