The conference will be hosted by the Departments of Epidemiology and Continuing Education of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and is being co sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the International Lead Zinc Research Organization, and the Councils on Hypertension and Epidemiology of the American Heart Association. As can be seen from the enclosed Draft Program, the conference sessions will be broadly divided into three areas of discussion, each to include papers to be presented by invited speakers representing research teams having pertinent studies in the published literature. These are: human general population based epidemiologic studies, epidemiologic studies of low lead exposure and occupationally exposed individuals, and findings from experimental animal studies which explore possible mechanisms by which lead may contribute to the development of hypertension. Each team will have an invited speaker to present its findings, and one or two invited discussants (individuals not necessarily working on lead, but experts in their field) will be asked to provide critiques and a synthesis of the material presented. After each series of presentations, there will be panel and audience discussion periods. In addition, there will also be separate sessions devoted to presentation of work in progress and for discussion of future research needs.
