Bessemer, Alabama Gentlemen We believe we can save some valuable time at our forthcoming January 3rd meeting, by sending you some information, which you can read before hand. Accordingly, there are the following attachments} 1. The original article in the newspaper from Nashville, which represents the first known concern regarding a possible health hazard in the use of asbestos-cement pipe. 2. Later articles in the Nashville paper that were printed after several of the councilmen visited JohnsManville Research Center, and were also talked to by Dr. George Wright. 3. A copy of a report by W. C. Huper, entitled "Occupational and Environmental Cancers of the Respitory System", which also outlines many of the other known or suspected carcinogenic materials. continued 4. A letter to Johns-Kanville from Mr. McCabe of the V. S. Public Health Service. 5. A paper presented in England making a positive statement that there is no danger from cancer from the use of asbestos-cement pipes. 6. A copy of a letter to us from Hill and Knowlten# outlining some statistics on the mortality from stomach cancer in the United States. It may be that you have had access or have read several of these attachments before. Our purpose In sending them all, is to provide you some of the general background Information on this subject so that it need not be repeated at our January 3rd meeting. We have also recently learned of three other areas where this question has been posed Bince the original Nashville article. 1. Officials of Fairfax County, Virginia showed our representatives a copy of the original Nashville article. Our customers inferred that this Nashville article was given to them by a cast iron competitor. 2. The Water Superintendent of the City of Jackson, Mississippi intended to pose this same question before the council at their regular meeting in December. This was postponed. 3. Dr. A. L. Gray, Director of the State Health Department of the State of Mississippi, has corresponded with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare concerning this general subject. So much for the hiBtory and background of what has finally led up to our meeting of January 3rd. We will try to accomplish the following at this coming meeting. Dr. George Wright, a leading medical researcher in the field of asbestos related environmental health problems--who is the Director of Research at St. Luke's Hob pited. in Cleveland, Ohio-- will speak to us about the entire field of asbestos as a possible health hazard. with this background, we would then like to cover with you Borne of the research in this area that our Company now has under way, and the possible need for additional and different types of studies continued to be made. Then from these discussions, we need to further develop vhat data or material should be placed in the hands of our field representatives, in order for them to intelligently answer customers* questions concerning the various health aspects. We have also invited Mr. Eric Johnson, Secretary of the American Water Works Association, to our entire meeting.
