Laboratories performing chemical analyses should be accredited in Industrial Hygiene Chemistry by the American Industrial Hygiene Association. The method of measurement must determine the concentration of . 70 .11* 0^ NIOSB/OSBA DRAFT TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR SET I (PART 1 of 2) AS OF 17 SEP 73 chlorodiphenyl (54 oercent chlorine) to pins or alnns 25*. C. Methods: Methods Nesting the above accuracy reguireaents are available froa NXOSH. D. Qualified Persons: Since aany of the duties relating to eaployee protection are dependent on the results of nonitoring and neasuring procedures, employers should assure that the evaluation of eaployee exposures is perforned by a conpetent industrial hygienist or other technically .Qualified person. T. MISCELLANEOUS PRECAUTIONS A, Store chlorodiphenyl (54 percent chlorine) in ' tightly closed containers in a veil ventilated area avay froa heat. B. Saployers should advise eaployees of all areas and - operations vhere exposure to chlorodiphenyl (54 percent chlorine) could occur. TI. CONNOR OPERATIONS Coanon operations in which exposures to chlorodiphenyl (54 percent chlorine) is likely to occur are: during its use as a transforaer fluid(for iapregnating papers, cloths, etc. for heat, aoisture and cheaical resistance properties; as a heat transfer fluid, lubricant, and wax 'extender; in the coapounding of sealing coapounds and . printing inks; as a plasticiser; in the aanufacture of ' insecticides, pesticides and fungicides; in cutting oils; and daring its production. . .I*1 71 of *0' NIOSH/OSRA DRAFT TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR SET I (PART 1 Of 2) AS OF 17 SEP 7 APPENDIX C MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE GUIDELINES I. ROUTE Or ENTRE Inhalation; akin absorption. XX. TOXICOLOGI ' Chlorodiphenyl (5<t percent chlorine) vapor is toxic to the liver. Rats exposed to 5.S sg/3 for 7 hours daily for 4 nonths showed increased liver weiqht and injury to liver cells; 1.5 ag/n3 for 7 nonths also produced histopathologic evidence of liver Manage which vas considered to be of a reversible character. The vapor and the liguid are aoderately irritating to the eye; contact with skin leads to renoval of natural fats and oils with subsequent.drying and cracking of the skin. A single case of an acne-fore dersatitls (chloracne) due to . exposure to chlorodiphenyl of unspecified chlorine content has been reported but the period of exposure vas not indicated.' XXX. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Eye slid skin irritation; acne-fora deraatitis; based on anisal data it any cause liver injury.. XV. SPECIAL TESTS None in coaaon usage. . V. TREATMENT Reaove froa exposure. Flush eyes with water and wash skin with soap and water.- If swallowed and the person is conscious, induce voaiting. Give artificial resuscitation if indicated. Recovery is usually rapid and coaplete. VX. SURVEILLANCE AND PREVENTIVE CONSIDERATIONS A. GENERAL Rost reported effects of chlorodiphenyl (54 percent chlorine) are caused by its capacity to affect the liver end produce an acne-fora deraatitis. Skin absorption occurs. It is irportant that the physician becoaes faalllar with Plant operating conditions is which exposure to chlorodiphenyl (54 percent chlorine) occurs. Those with skin disease nay not tolerate the wearing of 72 N10SH/0SSA OB APT TECHNICAL STANDARDS POR SET I (PAST 1 Of 2) AS OP 17 SEP 75 protective clothing and those with chronic respiratory disease sav not tolerate the wearing of negative pressure respirators. . B. PRBPLACEMEHT . The following sedical procedures aust be nade available to each esployee who is exposed to chlorodipbenyl (54 percent chlorine): chlorine: . 1. . A complete history and physical examination -- The purpose is to detect preexisting conditions that night place the exposed enployee at increased risk, and to establish a baseline for future health nonitoring. rxauination of liver and skin should be stressed. 2. Liver function tests -- Chlorodipbenyl (54 percent chlorine) nay cause liver danage. A profile of liver function shall be obtained by utilizing a aedically acceptable array of biocbeaical tests. C. PERIODIC EXAHIN1TI0HS u The above nodical examinations are to be repeated on an annual basis. . References 1.
