On February 9, 1970, we advised you by letter that several newspaper and magazine articles had been published indicating that polychlorinated biphenyls (PC3s) have been discovered at some points in some marine, aquatic and wildlife environments. Products such as our Therminol FR series do contain chlorinated biphenyls. These products are: . Therminol FR-Lo Temp Therminol FR-0 ' Therminol FR-1 Therminol FR-2 Therminol FR-3 In view of the fact that PCB has been found in the environment, there is a possibility that the .Food and Drug Administration may place a maximum limitation on the quantity of PCB in food. With these circumstances in mind, we have reviewed the applications' in which Therminol FR heat transfer fluids are used. The applica tion of Therminol FR fluids in food processing, such as to heat cooking oil's for food preparation and to-'neat edible oils in deodorizing processes, does appear to present a potential source for contaminating food products with PC3s. Because of the above factors, we feel it is in your interest as well as ours to use a different heat transfer fluid in your systems for those applications related to edible materials. Accordingly, we wish to inform you that after July 31, 1970, Monsanto will no longer sell Therminol FR scries fluids in applications where the potential for food contamination exists.
