Twerdok. Budget Discussion: Decision: 3Q04 financial report unanimously approved with one date correction to executive summary page. Decision: At API's request to facilitate distribution of funds, SRP/ERP contracts will be renewed annually by fund addition amendments. Decision: API will send out BHRC sponsor 2005 invoices on February 1,2005. This invoice will be for 113 of remaining company commitments. o ACTION - API to invoice companies 2/1/05 L. Twerdok presented M Bird's update on funding recruitment. ILSI/HESI contacted and require formal presentation to HESI Board in order to consider funding request. At least one OC and one Technical Committee member to attend. HEI has not been contacted. Attempting to make contact with an international childhood leukemia Group o ACTION - M. Bird to get details (logistics, level of audience, etc.) to set up briefing for ILSI/HESI Study budget reanalysis: Approximately $3.3 million of additional funds have been requested by the SHS investigators. The OC identified a 3-pronged approach to address this request: o reprogramming from existing committed sponsor funds, o supplementing funds from new andlor existing funding sponsors, and o the Technical Committee will work with Pis to explore potential cost efficiencies within this estimate of additional funds required to meet the goals of the study. Murphy, API Industry Operations & Downstream Group Director, reiterated that API is only the administrator for the BHRC, emphasizing that all consortium oversight, financial decisions and research activity oversight is the responsibility of the BHRC member companies. Additionally, API o does not have funds to contribute to the program, and o cannot expend funds beyond the funds available The preliminary plan developed to address the funding shortfall is summarized in table below. Doll expert (Yimei Zhou) Total $2450K Due Date (to API) 12/10/04 " " " " " " " " " " " " Joint Clinical & Molecular Laboratory (JCML) Sustainability Discussions: Sustainability expert Andrew Roberts (CoP) gave a brief overview of how to develop sustainability plans & projects, emphasizing that o the sponsors need a clear idea of the goals of the sustainability effort (function to be maintained, benefits of maintaining effort, funding requirements, etc), SH ELL-MCCLU RG-057031 11130104 Final o a business plan needs to be developed by appropriate participants, and o strategies need to be developed for likely scenarios for the outcome of the sustainability plan. The OC identified several potential future uses/users of the JCML o Shanghai hospitals for clinical diagnostic work o Researchers for diagnostic and molecular capabilities (e.g. NCI) for future investigations o Pharmaceutical/Biotech company use o "Safe Blood", which is an organization dedicated to ensure safe blood collection for transfusions. The organization will be expanding its program into China in the near future. Once Fudan makes decision for JCML to be managed by Fudan University or Fudan School of Public Health, BHRC (or 3rd party designee) should contact newly appointed JCML Director to facilitate development of laboratory business plan. ACTIONS Items: o Technical Committee to discuss with R. Irons if it would be useful for sponsor in-country representatives to meet with Fudan to emphasize importance of maintaining laboratory o L. Russo to contact APCO China for advice if/how BHRC can influence laboratory disposition decision by Fudan. Get advice by 12/04, for OC discussion in 1/05. o M. Johnston to draft strawman of transition plan goals for January OC meeting o OC to provide M. Johnston with in-house sustainable development contacts o OC to consider whether to involve NCI in JCML transition/sustainability, if NCI interested in following up as indicated at the 10/04 Int'I Benzene Symposium. o OC to meet in Houston (CoP) January 31 & February 1,2005 Technical Committee Update: P. Beatty presented an update on the October International Benzene Symposium o Meeting was data rich with interesting new data o SHS presentations were well received. O. Wong presented the design of the case control study and R. Irons presented an overview of all studies and development of the laboratory. R. Irons then went on to review data from a subset of highly exposed workers. Dr. Liang presented an overview of a literature-based approach to estimating historical benzene exposures in some industries. o NCI has expressed an interest in collaborating with AHS on future case control study in Shanghai As indicated in August, exposure information in Shanghai is less robust than originally indicated in the feasibility study. The case-control study will have a semiquantitative, rather than a full quantitative exposure assessment. Detailed exposure assessment update will be presented at next meeting.
