In order to assist you in determining the present situation at Warren, I- enclosed a copy of an environmental health memo concerning asbestos. After further research, I received a copy of a pamphlet from the National Cancer Institute. This has fees enclosed for your review. O One item X would like to stress to members of the Warren Pumps Products Safety and Kellablllcy Committee is that liberty Mutual is not an approval or certification organization, but rather, functions o n a consultant basis in the arose of accident prevention and safety.- After discussing your correspondence with Mr. Russ Besser, Technical Director-Products Liability, we felt that eliminating the use of asbestos related products would be the best course of action for Warren Pumps. These recommendations were baaed on the latest information available from not only the National Cancer Institute, but also the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and the National Safety Council. Research and development should be directed to reformulate products to replace asbestos with alternative material or compounds. Materials may be available which duplicate the rather unique qualities of the asbestos gaskets. If we can he of further assistance in this matter, please call.
