GYPSUM ASSOCIATION SAFETY BULLETIN A. The chairman requested chat the secretary relate the member company response for safety articles to be used in the Bulle tin. Following a brief discussion by the committee, it was their recommendation Chat each member company stimulate employee partici pation by urging the plant employees to write and submit safety articles to the Association. B. The committee reviewed the Bulletin format and it was the consensus that it was satisfactory in its present form. One member suggested that a possible change be considered when the next Bulletin mast head is printed. The secretary Indicated that present Bulletin stock supply would be depleted at the end of the fiscal year, stnd at that time, committee suggestions would be solicited. The committee requested that the secretary construct a chart showing the industry frequency rating over the past four years, as related to the all industry frequency rating reported by the National Safety Council, and print this chart in the Safety Bulletin. The secretary indicated that such a chart was already being considered for the October issue. docket. The committee directed that this item be carried on the Case No._0.8-55808 (26) , m/r-'V I -2 2. "CERTIFICATE OF MERIT" A'.'.'TT) The secretary submitted a "Certificate of Merit" award plaque for committee investigation. He informed the committee that Che award cose the Association $20,00 to purchase and mail, and re quested that they might consider adopting an award that might have greater utility for the winner, such as an ash tray or pen set. The committee, after much discussion, directed the secretary to obtain a less costly certificate and also purchase an ash tray for the award winners. Following a thorough review of Che last three editions of the Safety Bulletin, the committee selected one article by ballot. The article "Did You Bet Your Life7" by Val Robertson, Assistant Pro duction Superintendent, The Flintkote Company, Blue Diamond Gypsum Division, Frer.cnt, California (August 1967) won the award. Mr. Robertson will receive a certificate and inscribed ash tray for his contribution to safety. . 3. AIR A?T STREAM POLLUTION The chairman cited a few pollution problems involving plants on a local level. He stressed the importance of all committee members keeping abreast with local, state, and federal pollution programs. One member noted a recent problem involving the asbestos in dustry where a number of lung carcinoma casos had been reported by inhabitants of the neighborhood surrounding an asbestos plant. It was further noted that clinical tests and investigations had resulted in legal action against tha manufacturer by the claimants. The chairman Indicated that air and water pollution problems would have a dramatic effect on all industries and that the committee should take the initiative to meet any such problems head on if they should occur in the gypsum industry. Following a discussion of pollution problems in various in dustries, It was the consensus that the safety committee should have a more active program in this area, outlining the problems that exist and what steps have been taken to solve tham. On a motion seconded and carried, the committee recommended that the chairman advise the directors of the pollution problem, and suggest that they have plant managers join local groups studying pollu tion problems, so as to give our industry greater control of the problems. docket, The committee directed that this subject be carried on the \ iiii ______DCP.
