Smith September 23, 1987 OSF-199-87 BLS-51-87 Proposed Procedure for Dye Testing Autoclaves ABSTRACT The Laboratory Safety Committee and the High Pressure Laboratory Governing Committee recommend adopting a policy which requires annual, or change of service, dye testing of all autoclaves for stress corrosion cracking. Details of the recommended policy are contained herein. Keywords Safety Autoclaves Corrosion Policy Testing Procedure S-000 008968 QUALITY AND TEAMWORK - A WINNING COMBINATION OSF-199-87 BL3-51-87 -2- September 23, 1987 DISCUSSION A joint meeting was recently held between the Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC) and the High Pressure Laboratory Governing Committee (HPLGC). The objective of this meeting was to develop a procedure which would guarantee routine corrosion inspection of all autoclaves. It is recommended that the following procedure be adopted as Tech Center policy. The following situations will require that an autoclave be submitted for stress corrosion crack dye testing: 1) Whenever an autoclave is placed in new service. 2) Whenever corrosion is suspected in an autoclave. 3) All autoclaves must be tested on an annual basis. The dye test is initiated by submitting a "Request for Dye Test of Autoclave" form (Attachment I) to the Corrosion Department. The dye test will be performed by a Corrosion Technician and the completed form returned to the Safety Department Secretary. In most cases the dye test can be performed without pulling the autoclave. However, this will left to the discretion of the Corrosion Department. be The Safety Department Secretary will maintain both a hard file and a VAX file of the completed forms. The VAX file will be a reminder program that notifies the chairmen of the LSC and HPLGC when an autoclave's annual dye test is due. The chairmen will then notify the professional in charge of the autoclave that he must dye test his autoclave within the next month. The results of the dye test will be entered on the form. If no stress cracking is found the autoclave will be returned to service. However, if stress cracking is found the disposition of the autoclave (i.e. having the autoclave machined or removed from further service) will be determined by the Corrosion Department. The blank "Request for Dye Test of Autoclave" forms will be kept in the Safety Department Secretary's office. To prevent confusion the Dye Test Policy will be printed on the back of the form. Also, since this is a new policy, all autoclave owners will be given three months to have their autoclaves dye tested. 008969 OSF-199-87 BLS-51-87 -3- September 23, 1987 Whenever a new autoclave is purchased, a "Request for Dye Test of Autoclave" form will be filled out indicating "new autoclave" in the comments section. No dye test will be performed but this will allow us to get the autoclave in the cue for its yearly reminder.
