C0UPI2TS REPORT OH AR0CX0R3
This report Includes a oomplste description of tha work dona 1b this department on Aroolora. It la made up of 3 soporata reporta, the first by ..r. J. L. Eoworton desorlblng dlatllletlon, both aa to Ita development end operation. Ua alao deacribea tha operation of the plant chlorlnatore. The other reports deal with work on ohlorlnation. It waa aoon nade obvious that In order to eat a uniform dlotlllol produot, It waa neeeesary to chlorinate under nueh more carefully controlled coad ditions than was then In vogue In the plant. Tha aeeond report by Ur. J. n. Perry Jr., eleerly shows that low tsmperaturs end eccurnte tcaperoture oontrol la ebsolutsly aacsr.tlsl to produot uniformity. Quite oa i ;;nortmt la uniform chlorine oddltioa end positive eglt-tloa. liter reeding his report, you ccn rocdily eea fact e powdered lron c,-talyct_hPa obvious advantage ovor. a rwoeptecle filled with pr.rtloles .of_lron. ?lsase understand that while such Is said about tha yield of 4-4' dlehlor-dlphenyl, this waa largely Incidental. This compound oould be sore reodlly Isolated than others, tod see therefore used ca tha lcdlcctor or yard stick on tha experimentation. It so happened that we wore also working toward a nsxlrum yield of 4-4' dlehlor-dlphenyl et this tins. Pa port #3 represents tha lins of' work done by ur. I. K. Ualowan. HI a objootlva waa lergaly a maxima yield in chlorination of 4-4' dlohlordlphenyl. Iaaldentally a lot of moat valuable Information on the whole phenomena was brought out. Ua work again shows very oonoluslvely tho bunlo lr.oortanoa of lorn temperature ch.'.orlnation aa well cs teeporature control, and throve a strong light on the reason for poor yields of various 1 comers under various conditions.

ill of ths lnforuntlon available in the Anniston

Kashina Company of Canada has boon studied. . Very briefly: tbs firat sample of Aroolor 21SC,
shipped on October 17, 1929, gave promising results, whon mixed with sheilas, as n base for phonograph records. Subsequent ecnplos of
Aroolor 2165 from different batobes, -- and In fact, one sample from
what we have reason to believe is the aame batch ea that from which
tbs first Pimple was sent, -- have all given unaatlsfnotory rosults.
Attempts to find another Aroolor which would prove satisfactory have
all failed. Tho m'n In obcxge of the fork reports that they wero
unable to determine which of. the subsequent samples of Iroclors were
oat naariy satisfactory, as attempts to ohsok their results gave
oatradletary results.
