Dear Mr Webb: Mr. Siebenthaler has mentioned to me your remark about the possible advisability of a repetition of our former investigations in the year 1933. It may be found that such an investigation will be unnecessary after we have completed a bit of experimental work which we are now undertaking. Be that as It may, I would not wish you to feel that we are allowing the Ethyl Gasoline situation to go on without further investi gation. It has not been my feeling that the Investigation should be abandoned, but that its form should be modified from time to time through methods of continually increasing sensi tivity. The point has been raised of course, that it might take fifteen or even twenty years to arrive at a final answer on the question involved. I have never accepted that point of view, and there Is even less reason at present for feeling that such a yiew is consistent with the facts. As a consequence, the work whicn we have been carrying on from time to time has been In part for our own Information, but also in considerable part for the critical study of this whole question of how the truth may be arrived at. I believe we have the answer In our pockets. In any case, I can assure you that we shall not drop the subject until we do have the answer, and when it comes it will need-to be one which is satisfactory not only to ourselves but to others who are interested on one side or the other. I have just explained to Mr. Mittnacht the char acter of some Investigations which we are pursuing at present. I have explained them- to him In some detail in relation to the expenditures Involved, consequently I shall not repeat them In detail. If you have the time and are sufficiently interested, my letter to him will convey to you pretty definitely the thing we are after. I have every reason to believe from our previous investigations that this will give us the final solution of the question as to whether the handling of Ethyl Gasoline Is in any way to be regarded as a measurable lead exposure.
