PLASTER, STUCCO, CONCRETE, ETC.
'Exterior--In addition to durability, exterior stucco,
concrete or brick.paint should possess sealing and water
proofing qualities'. Surfaces of this type are porous and
absorbent. For successful painting, the priming coat must
seal the surface to .prevent the absorption of the-vehicle
from the succeeding coats and the entire paint film when
dry must lie waterproof to prevent moisture from work- '
ing its way in from the outside.

There are certain general precautions which must be
observed -i f a paint job is to be satisfactory To the Archi

swmetimes lost sight of, but they are necessary never
theless, if complete satisfaction is to result, and we make
special mention of them here because of their im
portance.

Surfaces' to l>e painted should always he clean. That
is, excess dirt should be removed, and there should be as
little dust present as .is practically possible under the
conditions.

Surfaces should always be dry. , Moisture present in a surface to be painted will nearly .always cause trouble, for that moisture has to. come out, am! if it comes out througli a paint film, the results are apt to bi*stains ;md .cracks, or frequently peeling of the paint finish.
Many failures in pahu jobs, no matter of what nature, can be traced 'to the. condition of*the surface before painting. That is,why we make this special mention of the subject. Much trouble* can be avoided by paying close attention to these conditions, and by writing a warning regarding them into your specifications.

So many effects are possible, and so many materials may be used, that the following specifications have been designed to give t]ie best information in the simplest manner. In order to differentiate readily, between open-grain and clo'e-grain woods, so that architects may know which of these woods-require paste wood filler in'the finishing'process, a list of the better known American
