OVERALL OBJECTIVES Mr. Smith outlined meeting of the Chairman and Sub-Section Chairmen of the Technical k Research Committee that took place on February 19, 1959. The consensus was that the overall objectives as discussed at that meeting represented those of the Magnesia Section. SUB-SECTION NAME ' Discussion of ''Magnesia" as the Sub-Section name resulted in agreement that "Magnesia" did not adequately describe the products within the scope of activities of the Committee. It was the consensus that the name be changed from "Magnesia" to "Molded", 2- ~ ( TRADE NAME PRODUCTS The trade names of products manufactured by the Association membership and the ASTM, Federal and Military Specifications to which they comply, will be collated and circulated as soon as they are received from the Sub Section Committee members* "MOLDED" SPECIFICATIONS It was agreed that specifications pertaining to molded products should be written on a composition basis, ' RECOMMENDED THICKNESSES -- The Committee agreed that since the cost of fuel, labor costs, etc,, had in creased over the past years that this subject should be investigated. The Technical 8* Research Committee, before action is taken on thicknesses, should agreed to a common basis of approach to the problem. Specifically, standards should he established for calculations; i, e, conditions of temperatures and relative humidity, wind velocity, surface coefficients, surface temperatures, basic formulas, etc,, should be established. The Committee agreed that lesser thickness should not be recommended over that which is now shown in the manufacturer's literature. It was pointed out that differences in "kM values for pipe insulation are obtain ed when tested in accordance with ASTM C-335 due to placement of thermocouplescnthe pipe surface, use of outer diameter of pipe for inner diameter . of insulation, the occurrence of air spaces due to clearances, etc. The Committee agreed that specifying thicknesses based on surface tempera tures should be discouraged, ACOUSTICAll MATERIALS ASSOCIATION MANUAL The make up of this manual was discussed with reference to the classification of products, REVISIONS TO FEDERAL SPECIFICATION HH-I-554 It was agreed that this specification would be revised, and the changes as proposed in Mr, R, C, Parlett's letter of December 18, 1958, will be circulated to the magnesia manufacturers for approval and/or comments. REVISIONS TO FEDERAL SPECIFICATION HH-I-523a It was agreed that this specification would be revised, using ASTM Specifica tions C--344 & C 345 as a basis for the revisions* (Following acceptance by ASTM C-16). REVISIONS TO MILITARY SPECIFICATION MIL-I-2819 It was agreed that this specification should be revised. The manufacturers (K&iM, J M, O^C) will be asked to submit their recommendations as to the changes to be made in the specification to the Association office. OTHER BUSINESS Copies of Mr. C. E. Ernst*s paper on corrosion will be sent to the members of the Technical & Research Committee, The status of Interim Federal Specification HH-I-00500 (GSA-FSS) for Insulating Cements, Thermal is to be ascertained, and copies of the pro posed specification will be circulated to the members of the Technical 2* Research Committee, ADJOURNMENT There being no further business The meeting was adjourned.
