I work for the OKC-County Health Department, and we are very excited about a recent Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis that was formed by President Trump. I know there aren't many being appointed to that commission, but wanted to reach out and tell you about some efforts going on in OK that I believe will be a model for the country. Gary Cox, our Executive Director, had the opportunity to attend a White House meeting a few months back on the opioid crisis. Since then we have begun planning to utilize our model for diverting patients from using ERs as primary care (a pilot program that has saved hospital systems millions of dollars) to the criminal justice center. We recently were named as a Kresge Emerging Leader Initiative fellow where we will be working towards transforming public health at the community level. Our project will work with the criminal justice center and community to put together a team that will divert non-violent offenders with mental health and addiction issues for treatment using an innovative model. While I'm sure the appointment of the five non Federal employee members on the Commission will be highly competitive, Dr. Cox would be a great volunteer to serve and make recommendations on practical solutions to the pressing issue. He would be an extraordinary representative of our state and the initiatives going on locally. If appropriate, my request would be for Mr. Pruitt to help connect us to those leading this Commission. Thank you for your time, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach me at 918.706.2404. Sincerely, Jackie Shawnee 17cv1906 Sierra Club v. EPA ED_001523B_00004694-00001
