Kirby SUBJECT: Slstersvllle Polymers I Operational Safety/Health Survey Dear Mr. Beddow, Attached Is the final report of the Operational Safety/Health Survey for the Slstersvllle Polymers I Unit. The survey was conducted during the week of October 20, 1986. Field work on the survey was completed on October 24, and a preliminary report was presented to plant management at that time. During the course of the survey the team noted many positive Indications of management's Interest and commitment to the safety and health program which exists at the plant. The team dlcovered no Imminent hazards requiring Immediate attention. Two priority safety concerns and several less serious safety and health concerns were Identified as deserving attention. The source monitoring data Indicates that new source data should be collected to Insure that employees working near the roped off area are not exposed based on the new asbestos standard. Recommendations: During the next Polymers I asbestos removal project, area source monitoring be conducted to ensure area concentrations meet the new asbestos standard. Silanes Transfer From Drums to EP Waste Dumps'ter The process of transferring silanes from drums to EP waste dumpsters generate large amounts of fumes which caused reported skin Irritation and burning sensations. Recommendations: 1. Review the proper selection and use of protective equipment and clothing during the transfer. 2. Install a "spot ventilation" system over the drums to contain and remove the hazardous fumes. Heat Stress The ambient temperatures In the kettle areas were reported to reach over 100F. Coupled with the poor ventilation In the area, a potentlaL heat stress situation exists. Recommendations: 1. Improve ventilation to reduce ambient temperatures to more acceptable limits. 2. Provide personnel training of heat stress and Its symptoms. -13UCC 022339
