Hubert Francis, George Fowler, and I visited the Morton College job in Chicago after Doc Kallem had called do to say he wasn't getting any answers. He had reported problems of cracking and shrinkage. We observed the cracking on a number of the comer beads. The shrinkage they were concerned about was due to tape showing through after the first and sometimes the second coat over the tape. We found that in pre-filling the round edge board, they were filling the entire recess. Without the recess for the tape to go into, it la bound to be hard to cover. They claim that the competitive material would cover under the same circumstance, but I don't see how it could.
Tigard and the Chicago plant have been working on a revised formula which we re-tested quickly at Chicago and then blended a plant batch. Mr. Francis took some bags to the Morton College job, and they were satisfied with the crack resistance and liked the mixing and working properties better. However, they still say that it doesn't hide the tape; but as long as the recess is being filled with Durabond, the tape will be difficult to hide.
I talked to Doc Kallem today and related this to him. He plans to make his own observations on the job and isn't sure that they should change products when we aren't absolutely sure what is causing the cracking. We discussed the possibility of contamination in the mixing tank they are using. I suggested that we could furnish a few more bags of the new product if they wanted to be sure before they re-order. Doc will probably contact Hubert Francis at the plant if he wants more of the new material.
The plant has a pallet of the new formula on hand and can make up more if needed for sampling others. Please arrange directly with the plant for sampling customers with this revised formula. It can be provided as a Triple Duty as well as a Topping.
