Lead Investigation Dear Dr. Kehoe: We have received data on one of our employes who works in the laboratory of our Charleston, S. C. terminal. Mr. A. E. Dooley and I are at a loss to explain these findings of lead in the urine. This terminal is a small opera tion and follows the same routine testing procedures as those in many other operations which are carefully outlined and pre scribed by our Research and Technical Department. We know of no other case of alleged lead intoxication from any other such worker throughout the Company. I am enclosing for your study the data submitted to us. We felt the first step would be to have careful checks run on the urine and blood to be sure there are abnormal amounts of the metal in the urine and blood. If you concur in this proposal, please forward to Mr. Paul Hartzel (Texaco Inc. - Virginia Avenue, No. Charleston, S. C.) instructions and proper containers for the specimens. You may wish urine samples for several days, but we request that you handle the details as you see fit. Mr. Hartzel, our superintendant at Cha r l e s t o n will arrange to have the specimens collected according to your instructions. Of course, the chelating agent by this time may have helped eliminate part of the lead, if it was present originally in pathological quantities. On the other hand, if the values you find are normal, either they were not abnormal to begin with or else they have been reduced to normal. If you find or think that the possibility of lead in toxication is likely, we shall have to investigate more thoroughly for a possible source of the lead absorption. N13177 K & 001 Dr. R. A. Paul Hartzel of our North Charleston, S. C. Sales Terminal on December 15th addressed the attached memorandum letter to the writer w ith regard to the absence from work of employee carried on our payroll as a Tester. . Mr. as Tester works in the laboratory main tained at our Charleston terminal performing the various tests on petroleum products received from our Port Arthur terminal by tanker as well as occasional shipments in tankcars, prepares compounds and blends of lubricating products for guidance of our terminal people in the manufacture of Texaco products and performs certain routine tests on additives purchased for use by this terminal.. Mr. has worked in the laboratory at our Charleston terminal for i=^numbeiT? of years. ' As Mr. Hartzel points out in his memorandum letter, there is some question as to the lead iq the system of M r 1 discussed this matter with Mr. J. F. Collins, Jr. of our Research & Technical Division who headquarters here in Atlanta and he also feels there is some question as to whether Mr. has lead in his system. .. In the meantime I received from Mr. Hartzel our Form G-267 that is being processed with our Comptroller's Department in order that the employee's personnel folder will be correct covering his absence from work. It contains a medical certificate signed by Dr. Wilson of Charleston, S. C. confirming the presence of lead in specimens of urine examined by him. Mr. Collins agrees that if this employee did have a type of lead poisoning that a few days rest in the hospital would not dissipate the lead. We would like to request your advice as to whether or not this employee should be examined by some other physician who might be better qualified to determine if there was lead in the system Although I might call on some of our lead suppliers for this information, I felt it best to write your office first and seek your advice and counsel before calling any outsiders in on this problem. Dr. C.
