May NOTE TO FILE Subject: The Texas City Brain Tumor Investigation During a May 12, 1981 discussion with Dr. Bruce Schoenberg regarding the percent distribution of brain tumors by type in a given death certificate series of brain tumor cases the following information was obtained: 1. The best source of such information is from SEER program and the best contact there would be Dr. John Young. His phone number is: (301) 496-5251. 2. Dr. Young would probably contact or put us in contact with the Connecticut Tumor Registry for the desired information. What is desired here is to select a death certificate series of brain tumor cases, i.e. ICD-8 codes 191, 192, 225, and 238, and a determination for these cases and these cases only the proportion among those having confirmed diagnoses either from autopsy or biopsy reports, of glioblastoma multiforme. 3. Dr. Schoenberg cautioned that there were certain problems with the Connecticut Tumor Registry. These include: 1. The registry was originally designed to include "malignant tumors". This would have excluded pituitary adenomas, meningiomas, low grade astrocytomas, and others that have not always been considered malignant brain tumors. However, because of the involvement of a Dr. Cushing at Yale University, this .other category of tumors was included. These are identified by the term "report by agreement" and involved an agreement by the Connecticut Tumor Registry to report all tumors regardless of whether they are benign, malignant or unspecified. NOTE TO FILE Texas City Brain Tumor Investigation 2 May 21, 1981 Dr. Schoenberg cautioned that our requests for the purposes of the Texas City investigation should specifically mention that we are interested in both malignant brain tumors and those identified under this "report by agreement" characterization.
