James' Letter of 1985 July 23 Entitled "In-House Labeling Program"__________________________________________________________________________________________ The Alcoa in-house hazardous materials labeling program is now complete. A national agreement with Standard Register will be issued and distributed to the field in the immediate future. A local agreement should be issued by you subsequent to receiving the national agreement for meeting your label requirements. Enclosed with this correspondence is a sample of the proper ordering form (Attachment A) to be used by your Procurement personnel. Local Hazardous Materials Coordinators are responsible for providing the Procurement personnel with their label requirements, which include: 1. label number 2. name of the material 3. appropriate MSDS number for the material 4. vendor stock number (to complete the proper vendor stock number for "D - DANGER," "C - CAUTION," or "P - UNPRINTED," reference Attachment B below) 5. quantity of labels required. There have been 47 different label formats developed (see Attachment B). These assure that the proper hazard warnings etc., are given for the material. For mixtures containing more than one hazardous material, the more severe hazard warning shall be employed. If materials are found that do not have an appropriate format, contact R. M. James in Pittsburgh for creation of a new format. Reference Attachment C for an index of hazardous materials and the applicable label format. This program pertains to hazardous materials stored in Alcoa containers. Portable containers must be labeled directly. The only exception to this is portable containers used by the same individual within the same work shift. Stationary containers can either be directly labeled or the label information can be contained in or accompany a batch ticket, process flow sheet, etc. For stationary containers, we suggest that direct container labeling be restricted to truly hazardous situations (e.g., flammables, combustibles, explosives, corrosives, etc.).
