Kennedy J. L. Moreau NOISE CONTROL During the past 3 years a considerable effort has been put forth through out the division to reduce high noise levels in affected areas. Much research, dollars, and physical efforts have been exerted to achieve improvements. This same effort has been ongoing in the Tank Car Cleaning area and has proven worthwhile. Air noise levels have been reduced considerably through the usage of various types of muffler devices. The most recent report, June 28, 1983, prepared by Buddy Moreau, indicates that with the use of mufflers sizeable reduction in noise levels can and have been achieved. As you might also note the cost of these mufflers are rather inexpensive. However, the problem that we seem to be experiencing is that the mufflers are not being totally used where applicable and if they are and wear out, break, etc., no one is bothering to obtain a replacement. Each of you has a responsibility to enforce the use of these mufflers by persons involved in car-cleaning operations and on any related equipment (air compressor, pumps). This is not to say that we will be satisfied with the present improvements because we are going to continue efforts in this area as new technology/ideas become available. The important thing at this stage of the game is that considerable improvements can be and have been achieved. However, if we don't utilize these improvements, then we're really not moving forward in the area of Industrial Hygiene.
