Covering manufactured by Johns-Manville. DATE OF SURVEY February 7, 1979 DISCUSSION It is common practice to cover small reactor lids with asbestos paper to protect operators from burns. The reactor lids are stainless steel and contain heating elements and are operated at elevated temperatures. When cooling the reactors the lids are removed. As a result of frequent handling the asbestos covering is abraded and must be replaced periodically. Mr. J. R. Monin was monitored for asbestos exposure during the covering of two of these reactor lids. The exposure was well below the TWA of 2 fibers/cc and a ceiling value of 10 fibers/cc. RESULTS Location 770 Shop Personnel J.R. Monin Sampling Time-Min. 20/2 LPM Exposure Fibers/cc > 5 pm 0.24 RECOMMENDATIONS Painting the reactor lids with VIMASCO after covering with asbestos paper reduces the rate of abrading and the distribution of asbestos fibers into the workplace.
