Dear ?ir. Stewarts
' 1'his is in. reply to your letter of August 10 to Dr. Calingaert, regarding the use of leaded gasoline in camp stores
If the store is operated under conditions of good ventilation, and if there is no direct contact of the gases above the flame with food, there should be no serious hazard from lead Junes. However, any food heated in xhe open over the flame nay become contaminated.
filters hare been devised which, for a certain length of time, rsnore most of the lead from the fuel. be have not yet tested the efficiency and endurance of the filter on any of the commercially available stores
Tor all-around safety, we suggest the use of kerosene burning equipment only.
Very truly yours,
Harold A. Beatty Assistant Director of Chemical feseurch
