Major Category 5 Hurricane Irma is projected to be a threat to Florida later this weekend
into early next week.
The sharp turn to the north is due to an upper level trough of low pressure in the east central US that will erode the Bermuda high pressure that is currently steering Irma to the
west-northwest.

This map shows the steering currents today. The upper level trough over the east central US is expected to cause Irma to turn sharply to the north as it gets closer to Florida.
There is some uncertainty as to the timing and location of this
recurvature later this weekend.
