645. Color Stability Test
1.0 Objective: 1.1 To provide step by step instructions necessary to properly run color stability test safely and accurately.
2.0 Responsibility: 2.1 It is the responsibility of the operations supervisor to ensure that adequate equipment, resources, and training are available to do this job properly.
2.2 It is the responsibility of the senior operations specialist and the operations specialist to ensure that this procedure is executed in a safe and efficient manner.
3.0 Special Notations: 3.1 Do not run color stabilities on mea under the following conditions.
4.0 Safety Notations: 4.1 When removing samples from the oven, use caution. These samples are very hot.
4.2 Safety glasses are required when working in the lab.
5.0 Procedure: 5.1 Determine initial color of the sample on the colorimeter.
5.2 Obtain a clean, dry 50 milliliter (ml) pyrex ground glass erlenmeyer flask.
5.3 Purge this flask with nitrogen for a few seconds.
5.4 Do not use any grease on ground-glass surfaces for this test. Ground-glass surfaces must be dry for this test.
5.5 Add 45 ml of sample to the flask. This should leave about 3/4 inch air gap at the top of the flask.

5.6 Blow nitrogen over the top of the liquid in the flask for a few seconds and quickly insert the glass stopper or lid.
5.7 Place the flask in the lab oven. Be sure oven is controlling at 120 degrees centigrade.
5.8 Remove the flask from the oven in 24 hours and allow it to cool to room temperature without removing the glass stopper or lid.
5.9 Run a color to determine the final color on the sample.
5.10 Record data in the proper place.
