My concept then, as it is now 18 years later, is to select the finest recipients, and, therefore, set an example for all to follow. Our emphasis - since the outset - was to encourage clear and cogent legal writing. That is my enduring interest, especially since I authored the first thesaurus in law. Since that time, the awards program has grown universally. Today, our scope of our awards ranges from lawyers in the military to attorneys in the executive branch, from general counsel of the world's largest corporations to managing partners in America's finest law firms, and from professors at law schools to journalists in law, and even legal writers in the largest law firms and leading law schools.
