Re: National Awards Program, May 22, 2017, Library of Congress
Dear Administrator Pruitt:
Almost two decades ago , I established a national non-profit foundation in law to promote the legal profession and encourage excellence by all lawyers. My concept then, as it is now 18 years later, is to select the finest recipients, and, therefore, set an example for all to follow.
Our emphasis - since the outset - was to encourage clear and cogent legal writing. That is my enduring interest, especially since I authored the first thesaurus in law. Since that time, the awards program has grown universally. Today, our scope of our awards ranges from lawyers in the military to attorneys in the executive branch, from general counsel of the world's largest corporations to managing partners in America's finest law firms, and from professors at law schools to journalists in law, and even legal writers in the largest law firms and leading law schools.
Our program is now co-sponsored by the American Bar Association, and presented in association with the Library of Congress. Since it is non -profit, there are no commercial aspects and our selections are made by le ading professors and highly distinguished professionals.
As in the past, we are honored that ChiefJustice Roberts has traditionally attended our reception; Justice Ginsburg is on the program this year, and Justice Sotomayor is attending our Gala. In addition, Chief Judge US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Robert Katzmann, will also be a recipient at the event.
To this effect, we would be extremely honored if you would accept this invitation to join us at the Gala on Monday, May 22, 2017 in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress. The R eception begins at 6:30pm in the Great Hall, the Dinner starts at 7pm, and impressionist Darrell Hammond'S performance is set for 8:45 pm. We expect over 400 guests to attend the event, including the General Counsels of General Motors, CBS, Apple, Paypal, Toyota, Bank of America, and Home Depot, etc.
As a matter of background, our Honorary and Distinguished Board of Directors include: Judge Richard Posner, 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals; Judge Alex Kozinski, 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals; U.S. Senator John Cornyn; U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr.;
