PROJECT: Monitor respiratory exposure to asbestos fibers experienced by an insulator. Maintenance Department. DATE OF SAMPLES: May 11, 1984. SUMMARY: An insulator was monitored as she bagged old asbestos-containing insulation that had been removed by fellow insulators. This job took place on the ground level of the Steam Plant, between boilers 1 and 2. Two consecutive samples were taken, one for 57 minutes and the second for 58 minutes. Her exposures were measured at <0.20 and <0.18 fibers per cubic centimeter of air. These concentrations are less than the permissible exposure limit of 2 fibers per cc of air. She wore full protective clothing plus an air-supplied, full facepiece respirator. RECOMMENDATIONS: Share this information with Maintenance insulators. Analysis received 7-11-83 The maximum airborne asbestos concentration measured 3.41 fibers/cc during a monitoring period of 10 minutes, while the craftsman removed insulation from piping associated with K-2 at the 4th level of Polymers I. Other monitoring results covered a range of 0.11 to 1.49 fibers/cc for monitoring periods up to 42 minutes. These concentrations are less than the permissible Ceiling of 10 fibers/cc and the permissible 8 hour TWA of 2 fibers/cc. In all cases the craftsmen wore protective equipment including Comfo 2 type respirator with type H filter, coveralls, goggles and gloves. Share this information with Maintenance insulators. In all areas where asbestos insulation was being removed the area was roped off and asbestos hazard signs were in place. In addition the insulation was wetted before starting and during removal as needed. All insulation was placed in labeled plastic bags for disposal. The area was washed down on completion of the job with all wet debris being scooped up for disposal, as mentioned above. Microscopy H. G. Kuntz/K. E. Williams IHI - Kemron / D. L. Beagle, M.W.
