Subject: NATI0NAL ROOFING LITIGATION CENTER SEMINAR "LEGAL CONSEQUENCES FOR ROOFING CONTRACTORS"
I have recently learned that the National Roofing Litigation Center (which is affiliated with the National Roofing Contractors Association) is hosting a seminar at the Drake Hotel in Chicago entitled "Legal Consequences for Roofing Contractors".
Scheduled to speak at this seminar is an attorney from Atlanta, Georgia, Stephen Phillips, on the subjects of "Bonds, Guarantees and Warranties". We have run into Mr. Phillips in some product liability litigation. He appears to be a formidable force, attempting to undercut many of the protections within our contractual relationships with roofing contractors.
I would like to find out what Mr. Phillips is saying or writing about these issues. Because of limited budgets within the corporation, it would not be possible for anyone from World Headquarters to attend this seminar.
Could you inquire of your Chicago area roofers if any of them will be attending this seminar? If you find that a favorable roofing contractor will be attending, could you arrange with that contractor to note anything that Mr. Phillips says v/ith respect to these items (or otherwise of interest to Johns-Manville) and obtain us copies of any handouts which would be provided? The National Roofing Litigation Center has indicated that the materials which will be" handed out will not be made available to anyone other than attendees.
If we are not successful in finding any roofing contractor who will be attending this program, I would like to consider underwriting attendance to this presentation by either

This seminar is scheduled for September 11 and 12. The presentation on bonds, guarantees and warranties is to occur on Friday afternoon. Please advise me on or before September 1, 1981 if you had any success in locating a friendly contractor who would be attending. Thanks for your assistance in this matter. FFK:kls
