Pesticides The newly formed subsidiary, Shell Agricultural Chemicals Co., will be transferred to duPont on October 1st. Relations with the subsidiary will be carried on as usual through the service agreement until the transfer is completed. Head Office will let the IH Lab know of any special needs or projects. LAM 000365 DPMC-16078 2 Passive Monitors (HMJ, DJM) An evaluation of the 3M Organic Vapor Monitor No. 3500 for sampling AC, ECH, D-D components, and TCP is nearing completion (HMJ). The desorption efficiencies and recoveries are all satisfactory down to 0.1 ppm for each compound. Storage stability studies have shown that samples can be stored satisfactorily in the freezer for at _least 16 days, but, at room temperature, ECH recovery drops to 73% after 7 days. A revised method is being written for D-D sampling and analysis using the 3M badge and charcoal tubes. Then a TPR will be written. A laboratory evaluation of the EO Chem Chip Badge from Assay Technology has been carried out by D. J. Mason. The badges had satisfactory precision and accuracy down to 0.4 ppm EO, but were not sufficiently precise at the 0.2 ppm level. This supports the Manufacturers claimed limit of detection of 0.3 ppm EO. A discrepancy in a peak exposure experiment needs to be resolved yet. A draft report memo is in progress. JDR, PJS, and DHM will make a survey of frequently sampled compounds for new candidates for evaluation of sampling with the 3M badge. One possibilty is 2-butoxyethanol. Gasoline Vapors (AKI) Method SRC 11A21/85 for Gasoline Vapors in Workplace Air has been issued and cleared for outside distribution. The method is now in routine use. A Technical Progress Report, WRC 320-85, has been written and should be issued shortly. We hope to apply the computerized report formatting and printing aspect of the GV method to other methods. DHM should have a meeting with PJS and JDR to discuss computer generated reports for a group of samples relative to our current practice of a hand written report on the back of each sample form. Thermal Desorption (AKI) A study of VCM and EDC analysis by thermal desorption using the PE ATD-50 is in progress. We will continue to monitor the status of the KSLA work on gasoline vapors by thermal desorption. Methvlene Dianiline (AKI) The current method used by IHL for MDA, acid coated silica gel tube, may not be adequate when MDA is present as an aerosol. New NIOSH and OSHA methods use sulfuric acid coated filters for sampling. Work has begun on a filter method to insure adequate sampling of MDA as an aerosol/vapor. LAM 000366 DPMC-16079 3 Asbestos The Federal Register of June 20, 1986 mandated the use of a slightly modified version of NIOSH Method 7400 for Fibers for monitoring the new exposure standard for asbestos. This has also appeared in draft form as OSHA Method ID-160. Among other changes , it calls for use of 25-mm diameter filter in a 3-piece cassette with a 50-mm cowl for -sampling, and use of a Walton-Beckett graticule and a phase contrast test slide for the microscopic analysis. The new filters are on hand to send to those needing to sample. The new microscope accessories are promised by end of September or early October (Note. These have just been received). The new method will be set up, checked out and ready for use in October. Meanwhile, incoming asbestos samples will be sent to an AIHA Accredited commercial lab for analysis by the new NIOSH 7400 Method. An attempt will be made to perform the new method with a technique to help differentiate between asbestos fibers and non-asbestos fibers which are not birefringent. IHL Turnaround Time (DJM) IHL analyses by residence time are shown for January-June 1986 on the attached table and graph. Almost 90% of the analyses were completed within 3 weeks, and almost two-thirds were completed within 2 weeks. If anyone has a special need for faster turnaround, they should include a note with the desired date, and call the IH Lab if it is very important or if time is short. Quality Control (HMJ, AKI, DJM, DHM) A new set of charcoal tubes spiked with D-D components was split and analyzed both at WRC and Norco to resolve some earlier problems. The results were generally good but there is still an indication of a storage stability problem with ECH which will be checked further. A memo has just been issued. Another round of QC samples of EO on charcoal tubes was analyzed at both WRC and Geismar in July. Results were satisfactory and a memo has been issued. There is an interest in establishing some sort of QC check for locations which are performing tetraethyl lead analyses on site for safe tank entry. Tests will be carried out to see if spiked QC samples can be prepared with known amounts of TEL or a lead salt for distribution to plant locations. P. J. Snyder will provide a list of locations doing TEL analyses to determine who might participate and if all are using the same method. LAM 000367 DPMC-16080 4 SRC Method Hazard Warning (DHM) A proposed new hazard statement for inclusion in future and revised SRC Methods has been prepared which is intended to replace the existing use of MSDS. CFP has submitted it to the Legal and Product Safety and Compliance Departments at Head Office for review and comment.. J. D. Ransdell will try to get a memo for us to present to Analytical Dept, management recommending replacing the MSDS with the new hazard statement in SRC methods. IHL Reaccreditation (DHM) A site visit for AIHA reaccreditation of our IH Lab was scheduled for September 19, and has been completed since the review meeting. The site visitor was James Nelson who inspected our lab about two and one-half years ago. At the closing conference at the end of the visit, he was very complimentary of our IH Lab operations and said he would recommend to the AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Committee that we be reaccredited for another three years. He had no Recommendations, which must be implemented to continue accreditation, and he had only two Suggestions, which must be responded to, but which are essentially "opportunities for improvement" and are optional. The first suggestion was to switch to the new NIOSH Method 7400 for Asbestos, which we were already in the process of doing and were awaiting receipt of the necessary microscope parts (which have since arrived). The second suggestion, which we plan to implement in part, related to having an independent person prepare our quality control samples. We are now awaiting the results of the vote for reaccreditation by the Laboratory Accreditation Committee. Our current accreditation expires on April 1, 1987.
