Qogy Washington, D.C., January 19, 1940* Mr. H* C* Does, Dear Claire* Upon receipt of your January 10th letter, together with copy of Dr# Kehoe's January 15th letter, Major Cotmd, of -the War Department, was again contacted relative to the use of loaded gasoline in their new cook stoves# The roooaaaendations from Dr. Kehoo were related to Major Cousd, hut he feels that since they have done so muoh experimental work on these units and already have some of them in service, they are not going to experience any operating difficulties* He olalzas that so long as the asbestos filter is changed every two or three days they have no trouble at all, when using leaded regular gasoline. He thinks perhaps they might have to change the filter oftonor if Ethyl gasoline were used# Ho claims that they went to great expense in developing this stove so that it would operate on leaded fuel, as they have found it very difficult to secure unleaded fuel, and besides it must be suitable for use on extended field maneuvers or in war time conditions when they would use fuel from their automotive supply. Upon the occasion of my original contact with Major Cotmd, he painstakingly explained harar they had anticipated trouble from leaded fuels, from the operating standpoint, and how they had finally solved the problem. Under the circumstances, it was impossible to convince him they should change fuels. It appears that they will continue to use leaded fuel until they are convinced, by actual experience, that it will not work# Major Cound states he would be glad to have anyone from /Our Company call on Kirk & Blum in Cincinnati# He says the units may be assembled by a subsidiary company in Louisville, Ky., but that the parts should be in Cincinnati and that there may be a number of complete units there# Yours very truly.
