The Bethlehem Steel Corporation wrote during the week ashing for an application blank and stating that they are favorably considering joining the Foundation in Group Ho. 1. U.S. Steel Corporation renewed its membership as did Owens-Illinois Glass Company. We called on Mr. C.C. Ruddick, safety official of the Benin Company, and gave him a full account of the work of the Foundation, together with sample bulletins, etc. He promised to make a report on the material and turn it over to his superiors, including Mr. Duff, company attorney. He said the Heinz people viere interested in industrial hygiene. He promised to let us know "if the matter cones to the conference stage." , Michigan Alkali Company resigned during the week. This was taken up immediately with Mr. Hults, Vice President of Mathieson Alkali Works, and a member of the Foundation's Board. He wrote at once to the company, sending us a copy, and he promised to take the matter up with their officials in person. More than a hundred "sales" letters were sent out during the week to representa tive companies, with all of whom we have negotiated previously. An acknowledg ment has been received from Hiagara Smelting Corporation. They wrote a nice letter but said finances prevented participation. We helped the Aluminum Company of America publicize the work of the Canadian scientists who have just published an article in a Canadian medical journal on the possible prevention of silicosis through the use of aluminum dust. We called this to the attention of the ASSOCIATED PRESS which obtained the story from the Canadian Press and carried it on March 4. The (A?) Science Editor wrote thanking us for the "tip." We also called the story to the attention of SCIENCE SERVICE. They wired late Saturday afternoon asking for "a news summary for Monday arrival" on the Cenadian work. We worked the summary out Sunday afternoon, collaborating with Mr. Hobbs of the Aluminum Company, and rushed the material to Science Service. I have not yet learned what use they made of it. Meanwhile, INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE, which has agreed to publish the Canadian article in this country, wrote Dr. Meller suggesting the article be entered for the Knudsen Award. Dr. Meller relayed this suggestion on to Dr. Frary of the Aluminum Company and to the authors. Late in the week -.ve finished a news abstract on. the new engineering bulletin, which has just been issued. A release was also completed for trade and technical journals. 3oth of these were approved by Dr. Meller. On Thursday we saw Dr. Hamor who also approved the material. We are planning to release the news paper story for next Sunday. Plans for distribution were worked out lane in the week. We also told him of 1st. H, H. Robertson's plan to raise the subject of the Foundation at the meeting of the National Association of Manufacturers' committee on healthful working conditions. He said he would take this up v.lth Mr. V.Tierrett, member of the committee, if. he returned to his office prior to the meeting. Through the assistance of Dr. Weidlein, Dr. Zimmerman of the U. S.
