Foreword
This catalog lists all existing American National Standards for safety and health, including the new and revised standards approved since tne previous edition was published in September 1980. The 870 standards listed provide authoritative guides to industrial safety and to protection of the individual. They are part of a set of nearly 12,000 standards approved to date oy the Ameri can National Standards Institute.
The catalog contains two major divisions - a listing of standards by subject and a listing by
designation.
Listing by Subject On pages 4-26. American National Standards for safety and health are grouped into ten major categories (see Contents, page 31. If a standard has more than one application, it may be listed m several categories. Within each category, titles of standards are listed alphabetically under subject headings. Titles have been inverted to give the substantive portion first and have been abbreviated to avoid repeating the subject headings, Users of this catalog who need to cite the full title should refer to the printed standard.
Listing by Designation All designations appearing in this catalog are included in the compilation beginning on page 27. See that page for instructions on use.
Ordering Standards All standards listed in this catalog are available from ANSI at the prices indicated. See Sales Policies, page 31. Order by the codes that appear in bold brackets at the end of entries. If there s no code, order by the boldface designation following the title,
OSHA The U.S. Department of Labor has to date adopted or referenced or has under consideration many ANSI-approved national consensus standards under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. To help employers and safety personnel keep up with government actions under OSHA. ANSI publishes an up-to-date list of American National Standards recognized or being consid ered by the Labor Department. Write to ANSI for a free copy.
The Institute (ANSI) The standards listed in this catalog are produced by America's voluntary standards system -- a federation of standards writing organizations, commerce and industry, and public and consumer interests. The American National Standards Institute is the system's coordinator,
ANSI performs several major functions. They include: Coordinating the voluntary development of national standards to ensure that they meet na
tional needs, do not significantly overlap or conflict with each other, and are produced with out unnecessary duplication of effort. Approving standards as American National Standards when it has verified that they meet con sensus requirements. Managing and coordinating U.S. participation in the work of nongovernmental international standards bodies such as the international Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Inter national Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). ANSI is the U.S. member of both and the sole source in this country of their publications.
Standards Information Another of ANSI's major functions is to serve as a clearinghouse and information center for American National Standards and international standards. It maintains an inventory of ail 12,000 American National Standards and the more than 6,000 standards promulgated by ISO and IEC. It also obtains or stocks standards of the 72 national standardizing bodies of other countries that cooperate within ISO.
To inform the public of the availability of new and revised domestic and international stan dards, ANSI publishes and/or distributes the following: A catalog of American National Standards with supplements ISO and IEC Catalogs Standards Action, a biweekly, which not only lists new published American National Stan
dards but also solicits comment on standards proposed for approval by ANSI. For further information, write to ANSI's Sales Department.

The list below provides the full names of sponsor organizations that have voluntarily sub mitted standards to ANSI for approval and whose acronyms and designations are used in this catalog to identify many American National Standards. Tha year data shown <iS the sponsor's designation indicates the latest edition of the standard approved by ANSI. In some instances, that edition may have been succeeded by a si4>saquent document that is pending ANSI approval. Information on such subsequent editions may be obtained by writing di
