A Summary of Environmental Health Activities of LIA for the period Jan. 1, 1972 through June 31, 1972 The major activities of the LIA Environmental Health Group for the period Jan. 1, 1972 through June 31, 1972 consisted of the following - A. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration 1. Target Health Hazard Program: Meetings held by the Department of Labor on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2 to describe the Target Health Hazards Program (THHP) were attended by Environmental Health personnel. Lead, along with carbon monoxide, asbestos, silica, and cotton dust,are included in the THHP and have high priority [n 1U' DOL pac-iio* 2. DOL personnel participated in the-DOL inspuutiou uchoduleo in the meeting of the LIA Environmental Health Committee during the LIA Annual Meeting in Montreal, and provided in formation on DOL's THHP as it pertained to lead. 3. Presented paper at LIA Annual Meeting on "Implications of the Occupational Safety and Health Act on the Sale and Use of Lead". B. Criteria Document for Occupational Exposures to Lead: LIA prepared a statement to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in response to their notice in the Federal Register for information on lead and lead compounds. C. Lead in Gasoline 1. Environmental Health personnel arranged for Dr. M. K. Williams to present testimony before the Environmental Protection Agency's Hearing on the proposed lead-in-gasoline regulations at Wash ington, D.C. 2. E.H. personnel participated in the question and answer portion of Mr. P. Robinson's testimony before the EPA Hearing in Washington on proposed lead-in-gasoline regulations. 3. All three public hearings on the proposed Federal regulations for lead-in-gasoline , held at Washington, Dallas, and Los Angeles, were covered. 4. A statement was presented before the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on " A Proposed Rule on Lead in Gasoline for the New York Metropolitan Area"( New Part 206, Environmental Conservation Law). 5. Participated in Environmental Seminar of LIA Annual Meeting. 6. Covered International Conference on Automotive Pollution / Montreal, June 26 through June 28. D. Lead in Paint 1. Presented testimony along with Mr. P. Robinson and Mr. J. F. Smith on the Kennedy Bill to reduce lead in paint. .2 Presented papers at the Midwest Regional Meeting on Childhood 'fly Lead Poisoning on the subject of the Lead Industry's Role in Preventing Pediatric Lead Poisoning. Met with representative from New York State Attorney General's Office regarding solubilities of various lead compounds. E. Emmis ion Standards for Secondary Lead Industry Attended meeting at the invitation of EPA officials from Standards Development and Implementation for the purpose of discussing proposed emission standards for the secondary lead industry. F. Survey of Atmosphere Adjacent to Ceramic Kilns. Conducted sampling tests as part of preliminary survey in cooperation with the State of Delaware Department of Public Instruction to deter mine whether art instruction personnel and students may be exposed to hazardous concentrations of lead. G. Miscellaneous 1. Presented paper to Japan Lead Zinc Development Association on "Environmental Problems in the Lead and Zinc Industry". 2.
