Grumbles January 5, 1989 REPORT OF POSSIBLE EXPOSURE ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS VISTAFROM ALUMINA The allegation form detailing possible adverse health effects from exposure to alumina in the laboratory and alcohol unit areas has been reviewed in Houston by the Environmental, Medical, and Legal Departments. The allegation will be placed in Vista's health allegation file according to our Toxic Substances Control Act Section 8(c) recording procedures. More importantly we will be investigating the potential health effects to determine if steps need to be taken to control exposures and if the broad range of symptoms described on the form are attributable to alumina. To accomplish this investigation we will specifically do the following: 1. Evaluate personnel exposures to alumina operations where alumina is handled. This has already begun and the sampling should be completed by March 1. 2. Dr. Drumwright, Vista Medical Manager, will review the available medical files of employees signing the form to determine if the health effects described are detectable from the results of previous physical examination. Dr. Drumwright will be available to speak with you individually regarding symptoms you have experienced. You will be contacted in the near future regarding this. 3. A thorough literature search will be done to determine if similar health effects have been detected in animal or worker studies. Results of the above items will be communicated to you. Any changes needed in exposure control; handling practices; and medical surveillance procedures will be made in a timely manner. If you have any questions at this time, please contact Keith Fogg. T. Grumbles January 6, 1989 PROGRESS REPORT VIS1A Below is a summary of the Biomedical and Environmental Affairs Department's activities for the last three weeks. 1. Advised the San Diego County Health Department on the nonhazardous properties of Alfol 1418. Discussed options for disposal of obsolete material. 2. Advised the LCLAB plant on disposition of excavation material and on sampling of painting wastes. 3. Interviewed Radian, Law Engineer, and ENSR as candidates for environmental site assessments. Each company will submit draft contracts for review by Legal. 4. Advised the Engineering Department on the applicability of the Reactor Opening Loss (ROL) equivalency to second resin production at OKC. The equivalency is sufficiently general to allow use on resins other than 5385 without additional field testing. 5. Developed a schedule and outline for January 26 environmental training at Aberdeen. 6. Researched applicability of New Jersey Spill Fund Tax to Vista customer at the request of the Saddlebrook office. 7. Reviewed hazardous management video tapes for possible purchase and use as training aids. 8. Supplier notification letters were sent to customers purchasing Vista products containing SARA 313 chemicals. Future mailings will be done using the existing system for mailing MSDS's. 9. Prepared labels for Light Thermal Olefins and Novel 10-44 Ether Sulfates. 10. Grumbles January 9, 1989 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE MONITORING SCHEDULE FOR FY '89 The schedule as proposed looks good. This is based on my understanding of the recently completed baseline study. I'd be sure everyone understands additional VCM and lead monitoring may be required if exposures exceed the PEL'S. As to the noise dosimetry, it looks like a 2-3 day survey in April.
