C8 Report Released Today
State environmental protection officials released today a report on safe levels of C8, a chemical utilized by DuPont.
The report is the result of a year-long study directed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection on the health risks of ammonium perfluorooctanoate, or C8, a chemical used by DuPont*s Washington Works chemical plant near Parkersburg.
DEP, with the assistance of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau of Public Health and a nationally recognized toxicology group, has developed provisional human health risk-factors for oral and ait exposure to C8,, Using a process based upon a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency protocol, a team of toxicologists determined a safe level for CB in drinking water of 150 parts per billion (ppb). The toxicologists also determined a health protective level for exposure to C8 in air of 1 microgram per cubic meter {@g/m3>.
The safe levels were the subject of a meeting held in May by a team of 10 toxicologists. The drinking water level was established at the meeting and reported to the public. The air level was also discussed at the meeting, but required additional development by the toxicologists and is being reported as part of the final report of the toxicity evaluation on C8 released today.

"DEP took on this landmark study to ensure the health, of Wood County residents and our neighbors in Ohio," said DEP Cabinet Secretary Michael 0. Callaghan. "Our Science Advisor, Dr. Staats, and the other expert toxicologists had human health and safety in mind when they developed limits for DuPont to follow."
Data gathered from area residents' water supplies by the DEP showed levels well below the safety threshold of 150 ppb. computer modeling simulations of actual C8 air emissions for the year 2000 predict the C8 level at the chemical plant's fence line is 2.7 @g/m3 and at adjacent residential areas in West Virginia is 0.2 @g/m3. The DBP's Water Resources and Air Quality divisions are reviewing all relevant data on emissions to determine DuPont's compliance with the November 2001 consent order in which DuPont agreed to meet the safety levels for air and water. These levels will remain in effect until EPA develops such guidelines for C8. The DEP i3 also conducting additional testing on the surface water to determine the concentrations of C8 in area streams and rivers.
