2009 INTERNATIONAL BENZENE SYMPOSIUM PLANNING Issue: Risk Management Department: RASA Program: Benzene Risk Management Segment(s): Multi-segment Task Force/Staff: Benzene TF/Bruce Jarnot Y2008 Budget Amount: $25K Prior Cost: New Future Cost (20098-2013)*: $25K Project Description: This project provides funds for preliminary planning meetings for the next international benzene symposium in late 2009 - 5 years after the successful Munich Benzene Symposium hosted by Helmut Greim in October 2004. Late 2009 timing should allow for showcase of industry-sponsored benzene research, including: Pooled Analysis of Canada, UK & Australia petroleum worker cohorts; Shanghai Health Studies - Case Control, Disease Progression & Molecular Epidemiology Studies; Field testing of PIG-A peripheral blood marker for early benzene effects Benefit to Industry: An international benzene symposium provides an ideal venue to present new research findings from industry-sponsored research (e.g., Shanghai Health Studies, Pooled Analysis of Petroleum Worker Cohorts) to a mixed audience including representatives from US and international governmental & non-governmental regulatory authorities. *Future Costs Over Next 5 Years (2009-2013; in 2007 dollars): At the present time, we anticipate an additional $25K contribution in 2009 toward publication of the meeting presentations. Such a $25K grant was provided to Robert Snyder (Rutgers) toward publication of the 2004 Symposium. Total contribution is not expected to exceed $50K total, same as provided by API toward the 2004 symposium. Anticipated Research Needs Based on Regulatory and Legislative Issues Beyond 2013: We do not foresee additional activity at this time.
