DU FONT SHADES A large number of inquiries hare been reoeived recently la regard to what SW lithopone should be reooramsnded for a given grade of du Font's lithooone. It Is not always easy to mate an Intelligent reoomemndatlon In view of the feat that usage oey not be stated. The problem is further oomplloated by the faot that in most oases no given lithopone manufacturer will have exaot matches for the given grades of lithonone produoed by- another manufacturer. Same grades will be olose, others will be quite different, with eaah having Its mn desirable properties. The laboratory is in the prooeee of studying the relative pro perties of SV7 and du Pant's llthonones in order to be able to answer inquiries more intelligently, and in order to determine whether oloeer matches are desired in some oases. Usage and consuaption should be con trolling faotors in the latter oaae. Radloal changes in general in our own lithoponee are undesirable and no ohamges should be made that will disturb the statue quo of oustomers now satisfied with SW lithopones. In some oases we do not have exaot matches for a given du Pont lithopone. Usage, however, may indicate that one of our regular grades will be a satisfactory replacement for a given oustomer. In other eases it may bs necessary to mate a new grade to satisfy the oustomer. A good example of this is Ponolith HR-8. This is s non-reactive lithopone with very low tino oxide content and low oil absorption. We do not have an exaot matah, but probably In aary esses Sir's Fermolith 20L (selected for low reaotivity end low sino oxide oontent) should be recom mended for trial. If extra low oil absorption is desired try Fsrmolith lOLL. Ponolith HR-8 seems to enjoy relative large sales. Our plan in to mate a lithopons comparable to this. Simple* should be ready for distribution in the not too distant future, as a trial rvm has been scheduled at Coffeyville. In the meantime try Fermolith 2GL, aa suggested above, on the basis that if this isn't satisfactory, a oloeer matah will be available. We do not have aatohes for HC. HCW, and HO-J types. Laboratory trials are scheduled for the HO-J just as soon as ths raw materials are received, a deoistoa will be made soon as to whether we will attempt to mate the HC end KTW types. Originally the former meant enamel grad* and the latter low reeotlrlty or the regular grade. It will be noted that there are two EL grades -- one 112 end one 133, The 112 gives low oonaistenoy and the latter medium consistency, whioh is lower in general than 1A-1U2. As a guide the following key oan be used: HR - Hon Reactive EL - Enamel IA - Regular grade HO - High oil or oonaistenoy HO - High oonaistenoy, high dry hiding H - Hater dispersible J - Soap treated In some oases several grades are listed for trial in finding a satisfactory substitute for a given Ponolith grade. In general, the first listed should be the oloaest matoh, but the others probably should be tried in order in oaee the oustomer is not satisfied. Maximus Water Absorption 21-26 Thia nigment la a thin oonaiatenoy, fine-textured product treated for easy dispersion in aqueous madia. It la oharaoterized by extrenely low water absorption. The water absorption range shown above indioates that 100 parts by weight of pigment are reduoed to a flowing caste with only 21 to 26 parts of water. Simple mixing in a water vehiole gives rraotically complete dispersion and freedom from aggregates.
