ROBERT W. FLANAGAN PITTSBURGH OFFICE, 6AB 1981 April 03 RE: ASBESTOS SEALING MATERIAL The following were in Mike Vaudreuil's files as references for materials which could be used as coatings for asbestos insulation to avoid the hazards of ripping it out: 1. Asbestos Guard Fix (719) by U. S. Coatings Collaborative, Chelsea, Mass. 2. Hydroban 500E by KRC Research Corp., Moorestown, N.J. 3. H. L. Clement Co., Sewickley, Pa. (no product specified) Do you know if these products and companies have been checked for acceptability, and, if so, have they been approved and cleared through Purchasing? ROBERT W FLANAGAN RWF:lmn t I I I r /-- . -- w. I INTRODUCTION One exploratory ASTM E-84 teat was run on a sample of Asbestos Guard No. 719 material to determine Flame Spread, Fuel Contributed and Smoke De- =veloped results. II MATERIAL TESTED The sample tested was designated as Asbestos Guard No. 719 Fiber Fix which is a self-priming, thixotropic elastomeric protective coating formulated espe cially for covering and containing sprayed on asbestos insulating materials. The material was applied to 1/4 in. (6.25 mm) thick asbestos-cement board at an approximate 40 sq ft per gallon coverage rate. III METHOD OF TEST The ASTM E-84 test method is a test for the "SURFACE BURNING CHARACTERIS TICS OF BUILDING MATERIALS". It determines the material's relative Flame Spread, Fuel Contribution andd Smoke Developed Ratings, as compared with those of Red Oak (100 rating) and asbestos-cement board (0 rating) under identical conditions. IV TEST RESULTS The results of one ASTM E-84-75 test run October 3, 1978, on Asbestos Guard No. 719 material for U.S. Coatings Company are: Flame Spread Fuel Contributed Smoke Developed 0 0 5 Caution: These numerical Flame Spread, Fuel Contributed and Smoke De veloped indexes do not define the hazards presented by this or any other material under actual fire conditions. IV LABORATORY RESPONSIBILITY The Factory Mutual Research Corporation makes no judgment of product uni formity solely as a result of ASTM E-84 fire tests. Product uniformity de pends in part on manufacturing facilities and procedures which would be in spected by Factory Mutual's Quality Assurance Follow-Up Inspection Program and on a written agreement put in force between both the product manufacturer and Factory Mutual. Unless these conditions are met, the product cannot bear the Factory Mutual name on its advertising. ;n No 220 Adm Rv. ASBESTOS GUARD FIBER FIX (No. 719) ASBESTOS GUARD FIBER FIX (No. 719) is a self priming, thixotropic, elastomeric fire retar dant, protective coating, formulated especially for covering and containing sprayed on asbestos thermo insulating materials and asbestos pipe lagging. Application by airless spray will provide necessary penetration and cohesion on friable coatings. Dried film is elastomeric and will with stand normal abraiding and abuse without cracking. Even slightly damaged or older asbestos ceilings, or asbestos coated steel work, or in areas where high-humidity exists can trigger a potentially dangerous asbestos fibre loss. An ideal solution to solve the asbestos fallout problem without expensive stripping and closing work areas is with ASBESTOS GUARD FIBER FIX. It is a self priming elastomeric protective coating, that is sprayed or painted on properly prepared existing old asbestos surfaces. This process encapsulates the loose fibers into a seamless, water resistant membrane and effectively seals and coats the object to which it is applied. After application, ASBESTOS GUARD FIBER FIX produces a flame proof coating, resistant to temperature changes, cracks, and most chemicals and oils. No maintenance is required on aging. Some additional features are: >/ A. Protection Factors Encapsulates Excellent Fire Rating No Flame Spread No Fuel Contributed No Smoke Meets OSHA and EPA Specifications B. Properties Barrier to water and oil Chemically resistant Fungistatic Aging and Temperature Stability y C. Attributes Durable Exterior/Interior Surfaces Needs no primer coat -- self priming Adheres to a variety of surfaces D. Application Properties Non-toxic * Easy to Apply No Hazard to applicator Spray or brush coating Cost effective For further information please call: U.S. Coatings Collaborative Inc.
