'Richard D. Goodenough, director of DEP's Division of Environmental Quality, will open the symposium starting at 9:30 a.m. It will be held in the auditorium of the Health and Agriculture Building, John Fitch Plaza, Trenton. He will introduce expert technicians from leading national companies which have major interests in this material. Vinyl chloride is one of the chief compounds used in the manufacture of plastics. It has many industrial applications as well as being used as a propellant in aerosol cans. Martin Sanvito of DEP's Bureau of Air Pollution Control, who.has arranged this meeting, said that careful handling and processing of various types of vinyl chlorides is extremely important for public health and worker safety reasons. Goodenough pointed out that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently engaged in a special study of the compound which it expects to complete in June. REGULATED AREA The fencing of the regulated area is complete except for three personnel gates. Shipment of these gates has slipped and are rescheduled for installation in June. 2. PERSONNEL MONITORING Personnel in the Resin Plant were monitored on April 9, 14, and 22, 1975. Of the 39 operators monitored, nine had exposures exceeding 1 PPM as follows: Castleberry Timmons (Utility) Henson (Utility) Copeland Draffen (Utility) MacDonald Coleman (Utility) Hurst (Utility) Overbey 3.1 PPM 2.6 PPM 4.5 PPM 1.8 PPM 7.1 PPM 3.1 PPM 1.4 PPM 1.3 PPM 2.2 PPM All utility operators in the above list spent some time in reactors and were wearing fresh air masks. The Compound Plant operators were monitored on 27 March 1975 and all results were less than 0.1 PPM. These operators are on a quarterly monitoring schedule. 3. SOLVENT CLEANING $V. A CE has-'-jgeen submitted for solvent storage, piping, etc. for Calvert City. 4. STRIPPER PROJECT A CE has been submitted for the addition of three pose strippers and automation. 5. FRSH AIR HAVEN The control panel has been enclosed to use as a fresh air haven. This project Is complete and will not be included in future reports. AP00034406 1 i / 1 J. D. VCM IN RESIN The VCM testing of product collector samples was discontinued when we believed that we could consistently meet specifications. However, we check a few spot samples and found we were getting out of spec and therefore started testing product collector samples again on a one-a-day basis.
