Robinson Lead Industries Association, Incorporated SUBJECT: Washington Lead Conference George Worden of our Washington office has been contacted by Ms. Yvonne M. Kelley who is conference coordinator of a meeting on childhood lead poisoning which will be held November 12 -13 under the auspices of the Committee for the Elimination of Lead in the District of Columbia which is affliated with the Children's Hospital National Medical Center. The attached letter from Ms. Kelley offers the opportunity for strong input into the conference on the part of LIA. The value to LIA of cooperation in the conference would include: 1. An opportunity to focus on old housing as the source of childhood lead poisoning. 2. A chance to dispell some of the myths about lead in the air. 3. A chance to discuss the proper type of legislation needed to aid in combating the problem. (Maybe an outside chance of forming some model legislation that could be used in other communities.) If the aid of Dr. Me Cabe could be enlisted for this project he would be a logical one to participate along with Dr. Lynam or Dr. Cole and Jerry Smith. The experience gained in participation with this group would be valuable in providing guidelines and information of importance if LIA decides to go ahead with the lead in pediatrics program recommended by Hill and Knowlton. In fact, such participation might open an opportunity to set up our pilot project in conjunction with this group in a manner that would be highly visible to Washington legislators, regulators and media people.
