Tne "Uni-Jet" sampler will be preset to aspirate air samples al the receccsended standard rata of 0.1 cfm, and tha sample voluna ealeulatad froa tha aspirating tima (usually 1 eu. ft.). Tha saapllng assembly la raadlly portabla and can ba loeatad eloaa to operating tsola, machines, and nanual oparatlona.
9. . Fersonnel.
Tha light-weight, eon?act battary oparatad "Onieo Modal 440 Mighty-Mite Air Soapier" haa bean aelected for thla phase of the survey. A water-filled "Micro Impinger" backed by the "Killipore" filter will be employed to collect tha dust samples. This sampler assembly will be carried at all times by tha man selected during his work assign ment and will collect a continuous sample from his breathing
zone. Staples collected by both methods simultaneously will reveal the amount of air-borne partieulate at the tool and at the point of inhalation. These results will demonstrate whether tha material does, in fact, get inhaled and the efficiency of the ventilating system In reducing the dust count.
ZZ. Sample Counting.
Samples will be sent by Air Mail--Special Salivary to insure delivery to the analyst within 24 hours as speci fied by the Asbestos Textile Institute. She counting, sizing, and calculation of results will be carried out according to the Asbestos Textile Institute-'s procedure under the direction of Mr. Raymond J. After the accumulation of apprcxlBttaJy 30 counts, the problea will be evaluated and redefined if necessary. A preliminary report will be prepared and recotsscndatlona for continua tion or termination ef the study presented. With allowance for bltrl-.s, the 50 counts will perait collection ef approximately twelve staples.
This survey, to be effective, oust encompass all facets of the work performed in the shops and in the field. Soac, at least toxen stapling of sites other than Chambers Works should be included for control purposes. The possibility that this program may be required on a routine basis indefinitely whenever and wherever asbestos containing materials are encountered must be considered. Certain restristive regulatory actions by Governmental agencies can be expected as a result ef the publicity attached to
th implication of asbestos in respiratory illness. Ths burden of proof of eonplianee with Threshold Limit Values will rest on the user.
Preliminary Results.
Ths initial dust eounts have indicated a very low air-borne
dust burden in the fabricating shop. This result somewhat'surprising and will require extensive confirmation
