FIBRE COUNTING TRIAL (Slide Exchange) 1990 Introduction : It is the A.I.A.'s intention to include as many industry related laboratories as possible in the scheme. The previous ones have been useful contributions which have now reached the stage of international recognition. Object of the Slide Exchange : Three essential objects can be foreseen when taking part in the A.I.A. slide exchange : - Positioning oneself amongst a number of other experimented fibre dust counters. - Contributing to the harmonization of the exposure levels evaluation at the workplace. - Feeling more confident in the results provided for compliance with standards and the implementa tion of preventive control measures. Registration of Participants : Each laboratory (or individual) must be registered as a participant by return of the enclosed registration form to the L.H.C.F. (with a copy to your National Association) Note : It is essential to return the form as early as possi ble after receipt to allow for the earliest and most practi cal circulation of slides in various countries. It is essential that the slides are counted as any routine slides and every effort should be made to avoid giving them preferential treatment. The present slide exchange will hardly serve a useful purpose if the counters do not apply their standard routine procedure of counting. In particular : 1) - The counting duration should not be longer than during normal activity. 2) - Slides should only be counted once. 3) - Variations among different counters from the same laboratory should be reported as observed after evaluation of the slide. After Counting : In order to achieve a reasonable deadline to produce the final A.I.A. report, it is imperative that each set of slides remains no longer than 1 week in the same laboratory. Results of the countings should be reported directly to the L.H.C.F. preferably by Telex (281133 F) or Fax (33.1) 42 94 98 86. Instructions explaining where to forward the set of slides are given in the accompanying letter. Provisional Data Sheet Report : Upon return of your individual counting results under the typical form enclosed, the L.H.C.F. will forward to you a provisional data sheet report similar to the one which is also enclosed as a typical example. This is intended to give you an approximate position in the sheme which in turn might help you to investigate your methodology and counting procedure within a short time delay.
