joint systems and specialty products
Why the name Georgia-Pacific makes such a difference.
The critical point in applying gypsumboard comes when it is time to reinforce and conceal the joints. A smooth monolithic surface is required, one that will accept various types of decoration. Georgia-Pacific produces a complete line of Joint System Products that includes the latest pre-mixed compounds along with the more conventional powders suitable for either hand tools or mechanical application. All G-P products conform to ASTM Specification no. C 475 and federal specification no. SS-J-570a.
There are several distinct advantages to Georgia-Pacific Joint System Products, including:
mixing stability. A wet mix consistency that remains stable, means you avoid those irritating adjustments before use.
plasticity. Joint System Products under the name Georgia-Pacific have notably smoother application properties. This plasticity enables far better control during the application and provides better shear and feather qualities,
bond durability. Georgia-Pacific products develop a strength and water resistance which produces an excellent bond and joints as strong as the board itself.
less shrinkage. By exhibiting a minimum of shrinkage, G-P products assure the finest job results.
high quality. Georgia-Pacific quality standards and controls are some of the most rigid and best known in the industry.
There are some natural
precautions that should be taken with any joint compound or adhesive: 1. All powder formulas should be
protected against moisture: 2. Each coat must be thoroughly dry
before the succeeding coat or final decoration is applied; 3. During the winter season or when the temperature is less than 55' F, finishes should not be applied unless the building has a controlled heat of at least 55 ' F for a period of 24 hours before installation or until a permanent heating system is in operation; 4. Use only clean mixing water at room temperature and,
5. One Georgia-Pacific product should not be mixed with another Georgia-Pacific product or with another manufacturer's product.

G-P Bedding and G-P Topping are
two-bag systems of specialized joint compounds. They provide the very finest results since each product has been formulated for a highly specific use. G-P All Purpose is a one-bag system that may be used satisfactorily for a number of different applications.
G-P bedding
This compound is designed as a fill coat and for adhesion of the gypsumboard tape to the joints, as well as for the initial application to nail heads and corner beads. Since it is used for this express purpose, G-P builds in the absolute maximum taping and adhesive qualities possible. G-P Bedding spreads smoothly and may be applied by either hand tools or by machine,
coverage: Approximately 15 to 20 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. of gypsum board used in conjunction with 40 to 45 lbs. of G-P Topping,
availability: in 25 lb. bags, only in the midwest and eastern U.S.
G-P topping
This compound is specifically designed for the second and third coats over the G-P Bedding. Since it is used only for topping, we are able to reduce the amount of adhesive and incorporate other materials which lessen shrinkage and make it much easier to work and sand,

general mixing instructions
All casein products should be mixed with clean, potable water at a temperature of 60s-80 F. Use 17 pints of water per 25 lbs. of G-P All Purpose and G-P Bedding. With G-P Topping, the mixture is 16 pints water per 25 lbs.
If water and/or the contents are cold, more than above prescribed amount of water may be needed in order for the material to reach a workable consistency. Mix to the consistency the material will be used. The wet mixture will stiffen during the first 5 to 10 minutes. After a soaking period of 20 to 30* minutes, the mix will lose its stiffness. After the soaking period, the material should be remixed until it becomes plastic-like and creamy. If desired, more water may be added, at this time, to obtain a thinner consistency.
The required soaking time may double if the temperature of the mix is much lower than 60 F.
casein application
The following instructions indicate the proper steps for using G-P Casein Bedding and G-P Casein Topping in making gypsumboard joints. The same procedure applies if G-P All Purpose is used for the entire application.
Apply G-P Casein Bedding to all flat joints and embed tapes. Leave a uniform thickness of compound under the tapes and shear off excess material. At the same time, cover ail nail heads and corner beads with the bedding com pound. Allow the application to dry thoroughly before the next step. The drying time will assure an even depth of taper and more uniform shrinkage.
When the Casein Bedding compound has thoroughly dried and whitened, cover the taped joint with G-P Casein Topping. Shear off the surplus, again leaving a uniform coverage over the tapes, and feather the edges. Repeat the spotting of all nail heads and finishing of the corner beads for each subsequent application, or as many times as necessary.
The bedding under the tapes and the first coat of topping over the tapes must be thoroughly dry before applying the next coat.
Cover the joints again with the topping compound and shear off the excess as before, leaving a smooth, well feathered joint. Allow the joints to dry before proceeding further.
For best results, cover the joint a third time with G-P Casein Topping. An alternative to this third step is to apply Casein Topping Compound to the entire area of board and joint and shear off tight. This operation is called a skim coat. It gives the surface more uniform texture and suction.
Where a skim coat has been used to finish the gypsumboard surfaces, a one paint application may be acceptable. For best results, a prime coat should be used over the entire area before the final decoration.
To texture finished gypsumboard surface, G-P Casein All Purpose may be used. For best results, apply a vinyl primer to the entire area before texturing. The texture may be applied with a roller, sponge, brush or other suitable implement, depending on the type of configuration desired. For heavy textures, use about 22 pints of water and for light textures use about 25 pints per 25 lbs. Protect woodwork and trim during application and remove all drops and splatters before they harden.

recommendations
1. Do not mix more material than can be applied in 1 hour.
2. Do not mix with other joint compounds in either wet or dry form.
3. Clean tools and mixing equipment after each batch to prevent acceleration of setting time.
4. If stiffening occurs (except within the first 10 minutes), setting action is starting and material should be discarded.
5. Do not retemper mix--never add part of a previous batch to a fresh batch.
6. Minimum air, water mix and surface temperature of 55 must be maintained in working areas until joints are completely dry.

wall and ceiling textures
Georgia-Pacific offers three basic textures. All are dry powder products and contain a tested balance of aggregate to produce the effect you want. The coverage, however, will vary with different types of surfaces, spray equipment, workmanship and customer requirements. The textures are decorative and offer no acoustical properties.
G-P wall texture
Packaged in a 25 lb. bag. this product has no aggregate added to its contents. G-P's wall texture may be applied with spray equipment, large wall brush, roller, or trowel. Wall Texture is `high white" and matches all G-P ceiling textures. In addition, it offers a hard durable surface, good hiding properties, maximum coverage and great workability.
G-P vermiculite
Ceiling Texture packaged in a 40 lb. bag. This product contains vermiculite aggregate and is available in fine, medium or coarse textures. Vermiculite aggregate offers an acoustical finish appearance for ceilings but does not provide acoustical sound correction. The use of this product results in a "high white,1' rugged texture with semi-rounded "hills and valleys" that help conceal surface defects while producing a beautiful, decorative textured ceiling.

application to gypsumboard
All surfaces including joint compound applications, must be clean and dry. If surface has been previously painted, roughen any glossy paint, and clean well.
Apply a white vinyl based primer or equivalent to new work prior to texturing. Protect woodwork and trim during application and remove all overspray from walls before the texture dries. For best results use the lowest air pressure that will produce a satisfactory spray pattern. If one coat will not cover due to uneven suction, or if a heavy application is desired, it may be necessary to apply a second coat. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.
application to concrete
All surfaces must be clean, dry and sound with no chalkiness or efflorescence. Prime all exposed metal with a rust inhibitive primer. New concrete should be aged at least 60 days. Irregularities and form marks must be smoothed. High spots can be ground down. Depressions and holes can be
filled with G-P Joint Compound. For deep fills, G-P Speed Set is recommended. Seal the entire surface with a white vinyl sealer or pigmented shellac. Spray the G-PTexturein two applications at right angles to each other, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.

G-P grabit vinyl masonry adhesive
Georgia-Pacific Grabit is an adhesive which permits direct attachment of gypsumboard to masonry walls. It may be used on poured concrete, cinder block or concrete block walls which are reasonably straight and true and are free from surface treatment, decoration, or protrusions. Grabit may be used on exterior walls without waterproofing if they are above grade level. Grabit may also be used to adhere gypsum board to polystyrene insulation material.
Adhesion with Grabit Masonry Adhesive is secure and perma nent, with no need for furring strips or fasteners. After mixing with water as directed, Grabit can be applied with blade or caulking gun. Only four 1" ribbons are needed for each 4' wide gypsum board panel. The adhesive fills in all normal irregularities in the masonry. In 3 to 4 hours, Grabit sets hard, and joint taping and finishing operations may then be started. This adhesive may be used wherever there is need to attach gypsumboard to masonry walls: in homes, apartments, hotels, offices and plants.
coverage: Up to Vt lb. per square foot depending on roughness of base surface. Available in 50 lb. bags.
surface preparation: Surfaces should be reasonably straight and true, free of fragments of mortar, splinters from forms, pro truding reinforcing rods, etc. Surface out of alignment by 1" or more should be leveled by some suitable means before attempting to apply gypsumboard with Grabit.

mixing instructions:
Mix dry powder Grabit Masonry Adhesive with clean potable water at a temperature of 60-80 F. In clean mixing container. Use 20 pints of water to 50 lbs. of Grabit. The results will be a paste which is plastic enough to be applied with a caulking gun, yet stiff enough so that the bead will not sag or flow. This mixture will maintain its consistency for 2Vi hours or more; however, after that period Grabit hardens perma nently in 3 or 4 hours.
application instructions:
On the back side of the gypsum board to be used, apply a 1 "wide ribbon of Grabit to each long, wrapped edge and two ribbons in the field of the board at 16" intervals. It may be advisable, in some cases, to use mechanical fasteners or a brace to hold the gypsumboard in place until Grabit Masonry Adhesive has hardened. To align joints, place a piece of 2" x 4" over the adjoining board edges and tap with a hammer. If there is difficulty in aligning board edges in this manner, the use of cut masonry nails may be in order. Protect woodwork and trim and remove all droppings from floor and face of boards before they harden.

G-P joint system compound
Georgia-Pacific has packaged a joint compound for the consumer market, it contains the same high quality formulation for superior performance. It can be used almost immediately after mixing, and still retain the mixed consistency for extended periods of time.
For use in bedding and topping tape and spotting nail heads, the consumer Joint System Compound spreads smoothly, bonds tightly and resists edge cracking. It also feathers well, shrinks very little and sands easily.
availability: In either 5 lb. bags, or 4 lb. bags with a 60' roll of tape, everywhere in the continental U.S.
mixing: Mix the 4 lb. bag with 2Vi pints of water. The 5 lb. bag with 3 pints of water.
application
With a semi-flexible broad knife, generously "butter" the joint with Joint System Compound, working
it well into the joint. Shear off the excess material.
Press strip of G-P Tape in the center of the joint. Smooth down firmly into the compound, remove excess cement and level into an even surface.
When first coat is dry, cover with Joint Compound. Shear off surplus, leaving a smooth joint. When dry, another coat over the entire surface insures best results.
Allow 24 hours drying time and then sand carefully with fine sandpaper for a smooth finish. For best results a vinyl primer should be applied before decoration.

joint system drying time
Temperature and humidity have a direct effect on the drying time on joint treatment products. While there is very little that can be done to alter temperature and humidity under job conditions, care should be taken to note the average differences in drying times under different atmospheric conditions, so that problems may be minimized. Joint treat
ment products must be thor oughly dry before successive coats are applied, and/or final decoration is applied. In all cases, a well ventilated area assists in the oroper drying of these materials.
The chart shown below indicates the average drying periods for joint treatment products under different temoerature and humidity conditions.
