More detailed lnfomation on these activities or others not cmcerated herein will be supplied on request. , GENERAL 1. Annual Meeting - Tbo Annual Meeting of the Association was held at the Drake hotel, Chicago, on April 2li-2> with one session held Jointly with American Zinc Institute. Registration at the L.I.A. Deeting reached a record lit6. 2. "Lead* - One issue of our publication "Lead* was published and mailed to about 50,1)00 users anti prospective users of lead. Another issue was prepared and sent to the printers for mailing shortly. 3. Research - On recommendation of the Technical Steering Committee and with approvnl of the Industry Development Comittee and Board of Directors, L.I.A. con tracted with Battclle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio, for an "Evaluation of Research Needs and Formulation of a Research Program," The contract (Villa for completion of tho study in six months at a cost not to exceed (20,000. To get the study under way the Technical Steering Committee net with Battalia personnel at Colinbus on May 27. l. A.B.M.3. - Tho Secretary prepared the introductory page to the lead section of the Annual Review of the American Bureau of Uetol Statistics and certain of the statistics used woro supplied by L.UU . 5. Statistics - L.I.A. *s Annual Statistical Review was printed and mailed to members. 6. Naval Reserve - The Secretary and a staff member addressed the 0.3. Naval fteserve Ccopoaito Ccnpany on the general subject of lead economics and uses in New Tcrk on June 26. A covie of lead mining and numerous slides were shown. The Company is composed of about 100 Naval Reserve Officers with average rank of lieu tenant eoanandor. 7. Battery Conference - A utaff member attended the annual battery conference sponsored t>y the ltvcr Sources Division, 0, S, Army Signal Engineering Laboratories, at Asbury Park, N. J., on May 22-23. Battery Association - The Secretary represented L.I.A. at the Annual Mooting of the Association rf American Battery Manufaoturera April 29 to May 1, 10. Publicity - A number of publicity roleasoe concerning Association aotivitioa and developments favorable to lead was sent to newspapers and the trade press, 11. A.S.T.X. - L.I.A, was represontod at the annual meeting of tha American Society for Jesting Materials in June. 12. Developments in Storage Batteries - Emission to reproduce a paper by this title, presented by a representative of Ford Motor Company before the Society of Automotive Engineers, was obtained from that Society and tha paper circulated to members. HEALTH AMD-SAFETT 13. Ceranics - The rather opposite problems of assuring adequate control of lead hazards in the ceranics industries and at the sano time allajdng groundless fears on this score have had considerable recent attention. In addition to the handling of individual Inquiries, tho plan to provide speakers on the medical and engineer ing phasos of these questions at tho annual meeting of the American Ccramio Socie ty held in Dallas on Uay 6th was carried out, and preliminary discussions for the dolivery of two similar papers at tho fall meeting of the fbrcolain Enamel Inatituto aro currently under way, Also, Section 10 of the L.I.A. Ceramics Manual is being reprinted with tho title "Handling Load Compounds in the Ceramic Industries1 and several thousand copies will be distributed to load frit manufacturers for issuance to their customers. lit. Childhood Load Poisoning - With the publication of threo reports by two Balti more physicians "and tricar issuance in reprint fern, the study of childhood plunblsm financed by the L.I.A. at Tho Johns Hopkins Hospital cane to a close at the end of March. The work at tho Chlldron's Uudlsal Ccntor in Boston continues, Tho wide interest in this subject was evidenced by many requests for copies of the Baltimore reprints during tho current quarter. 1?. Legislation - legislative proposals potontlally ininlcal to our interests have continued to be watched. In this connection it should be mcntlonod that a 1955 decision of a county court in North Carolina, holding a pigment supplior guilty of negligence in having failed to cpply poison labels to a shipment of litharge, has boon reversed by tho Supremo Court of that State. This is of great importance in countering the anticipated tendency to interpret the so*callod pharmacy lens of the several states os applicable to commercial products such as pigments and points, 18. Meetings and Visits - Ueotings attended during tho quarter included the annual week-long Industrial Health Confcronco in St. Louis, and meetings of tho /jaoricon Industrial Rygiono Association end American Medical Association in New York City, Visits wero mado to throo Industrial Installations in Ulssourl and to throo oduoational institutions in Massachusetts. 19. 1958 Conforonca - Flans aro being considered for a possible 2-day Load Hygiene Conlerenoa noxt year, similar to that held in Chicago in 19U8. Plumbers* Shew - Tho Association exhibited at tho exposition in connection tuth tho Annual Meoting of tho National Association of Pinching Contractors in Dallas, Toxas, for tho woek of June 10. 21. Sweet's Catalog - A contract was signed for two U-page catalogs, one on shoot load roofing and flashing and ono on lead pitching natorials, to appear in Sweet's Catalog for 1958. Both Street's architectural filo and light construction fils will bo used, with total circulation of over N6,000. Work has bogun on preparation of those catalogs. 22. Cher-leal Exposition - \fith approval of the Industry Development Comittoe, tho association has contracted for space at tho Exposition of tha Chemical Industries to be held at tho New York Colleens the week of December 2, 23. Soldering Handbook - At a mooting of tho Association's Soldor Committee with tho Brazing and Soldo ring Committee of the American Voiding Society on Juno 2li and 25, the completed draft of tho Soldoring Handbook was turned over to the Heidirg Socioty, Parts of tho draft are still subject to review by tho latter, 2U Lead Gutter linings - Installation of nearly 3,030 sq. ft. of hard load guttor linings on a new dormitory at Duko Onivorsity was completed. As previously mcntlonod tho L.I.A. staff assisted in preparation of specifications and dotalls for this work. A staff member inspoctod tho Job end visited tho architects and contractors, who are highly plcasod with the use of lead and found tho cost of installation lower than for copper. Roeoarch - Preliminary arrangements were made for a third graduate foilowehip for research on load in coramics. Publicity - Tho role of lead in porcelain cncmols for aluminum was publicized in connection with c market forecast for this product made by tho Porcolain Enamel Institute. RED LED o 31. Advertising - Preparation of all throe advertisements in our current campaign emphasising red lead paints for highway structural steel was completed. Each ad will appear twico in "Enginaering Hews-Rocord,* starting with April, 1957, and running through September, 1957* 32. New Technical Letter - Red Lead Tochnlcal Letter Ho, 12 was prepared, prlntod and nailed to about 11,J00 unglnoors, contractors and paint manufacturers. It contains complete recommendations for printing highway structural steel. 33. Conzdttoo - The Rod Lead Technical Concdtteo mot twice during this quarter, Iho first mooting was to inspect tests already on exposure and complete tho new technical lcttor. Tho second was to evaluate the exposure tests and plan a new test Including sooo load pigments, like calciua plumbato, recently lntroducod abroad. 3h. Ship Bottom Point - Two Navy destroyers whoso hulls were palntod three years ago with a Navy paint rnd a rod load paint developed by the Rod Load Technical Condttoo wore drydockcd and inspected.
