SUBJECT SUBSTITUTES FOR ASBESTOS IN PLASTIC CEMENT (W/Q 694-681)
I talked with Mr. Nate Greening of PCA in regard to any work they have done with materials to aid pumpability of plaster mixes. He mentioned the following materials they have tried, some of which were either unsuccessful as a pumping aid or were deleterious to the physical properties of the plaster.
Paper Pulp Fiber Talc Mineral Wool Starch Polyox (pumpaid marketed by W. R. Grace) Methylcellulose plus Lime
They found the best materials were paper pulp or mineral wool. Talc worked well, but i t is chemically close to asbestos. The other mater-als either entrained too much a ir, caused slow sets or reduced the a b ility of the plaster to stick to the wall.
He suggested that we try various proportions of expansive cement. They found that high C3A in cement would enhance the pumpability.
Based on his recommendations I think we should try additions of small amounts of expansive component and also run more tests with paper pulp and mineral wool.
