AMENDMENT TO ANSWERS TO INTERROGATORIES PRELIMINARY STATEMENT
The preliminary statement to the answers to interrogatories of Defendant M.H. Detrick Company dated October 27, 1987 stated that because of the lapse of time between the date interrogatories were served and the date Defendant ceased manufacturing and/or selling asbestos-containing products. The answers given were subject to change based on Defendant1s continuing investigation and asserted that its answers were not based on first-hand knowledge. Since that date. Defendant has made additional investigation and has learned additional facts concerning the content of its asbestos-containing products and now no longer asserts that it is without first-hand knowledge as to the type of asbestos used in its products.
INTERROGATORY NO. 9:
Have any of the products listed above in Interrogatories No. 7
been altered in chemical composition since first being marketed?
ANSWER:
It is believed that only minor changes were made in product composition during their period of manufacture by M.H. Detrick Company. To answer this Interrogatory completely, reference would need to be made to the exact product formulations which were turned over to Refractory and Insulation when Defendant's Insulation plant was sold in 1964. The attached Exhibit B details that the products manufactured by Defendant contained only Chrysotile asbestos. Following March 1964 Combustion Engineering may have changed the composition of products it made. Such records are in Combustion Engineering's possession.
INTERROGATORY NO. 12:
Do any written memoranda, specifications, blueprints or other
written materials of any kind or character relating to the design
and preparation of said products now exist?
ANSWER:
See Exhibit B. These records are believed to have been retained by Refractory and Insulation Co. when M.H. Detrick Company sold the Aurora, Illinois insulation plant in the Spring of 1964. Defendant recalls being advised that these records no longer exist.
INTERROGATORY NO. 14:
In what year did the defendant first begin selling or
distributing any products containing asbestos?
ANSWER:
M.H. Detrick Company began manufacturing insulation products in the late 1930's. Some of the products may have contained Chrysotile asbestos at that time. Records at M.H. Detrick Company's insulation plant in Aurora were retained by Refractory & Insulation when it purchased the plant in 1964. See attached exhibit "B" for dates of known Chrysotile asbestos containing products manufactured by M.H. Detrick Company. To know of any other products, reference would have to be made to the specific formulations and said formulations were turned over in 1964.
-2-
INTERROGATORY NO. 60: As to each product identified in response to the foregoing
interrogatory, please indicate: (a) The type of asbestos contained in the product as it was first manufactured;
ANSWER: (a) See Exhibit "B". The fiber type used in all products manufactured by Defendant was Chrysotile.

Now comes the Defendant, M. H. Detrick Company, and for its compliance withctiiisi.CQurt.tsrflrdfirsrequiringcDefendant^or.iistr.cn.ca products it has manufactured*, -distributed-or sold-states:. .
See attached Exhibit "A" - In: addition; Insulating Block and Insulating Cement were manufactured, by M--H~.Detrick Company, put by M. H. Detrick Company into packages of Mexico Refractories under the brand name of "M Block" as to insulating block, and an unknown name as to cement. When Kaiser acquired Mexico Refractories about 1959, a similar arrangement continued until Detrick sold its asbestos plant in 1964. The block was then called "Kaiser M Block.
/
The brand name of the cement is unknown. In addition. Detrick Insulating ;Cement predecessored Super 711 Cement. Defendant has no records and its investigation has not disclosed manufacture of products otherwise labeled which contained asbestos. M. H. Detrick Company sold its insulation plant to Refractory and Insulation in 1964. Thereafter, M. H. Detrick Company purchased and sold minor
quantities of asbestos products from other manufacturers, primarily Refractory and Insulation (Combustion Engineering). Investigation continues.

industrial INSULATIONS
DESCRIPTION
Compost of fine nodule, high temperature mineral fiber, hydrau binders, and other suitable material*. HiliU successfully combines excellent low shrinkage. smooth finish, and wet strength property of a one-coat insulating finish cement with the flexibility, high teperature resistance, and thermal qualities of mineral fiber insulati cement. For temperatures to 1400 F.
uses
May be applied as single layer. Develops a tight bond on b!o< blanket insulation and insulating cement. Widely used for insulati valves, fittings, heated equipment, pumps, etc. Especially suitable 1 use over calcium silicate or 85% magnesia insulation products.
FEATURES
Oae-coat ppliptipp Hilite is a hydraulic setting material < signed for single layer application and can be used as be an insulating and Anishing type cement. An ideal material : use on calcium silicate. 85'/- magnesia or mineral fdior produc
fe*y f apply Hilite is readily trowelled on flat surfaces a easily pulmed on valves, fittings and irregular surfaces. T one-coat application results in definite economies on the j
Sett few Hilite develops a smooth, durable, protective fin within a few hours after application. Because of its hydrau bond it does not require heat for setting.
Mai** Hilite dries to a smooth, light reficetant surface wh requires no further treatment as an interior finish. W> thoroughly dry the finish may be painted if desired. Out-d. -applications should be weather protected, tow temperature stallations require a vapor seal type finish.
