ORGANIZATION Monsanto Chemical Company is organized on a decentralized line-and-staff basis. The president is the chief executive officer. Six executive officers have functional control in the fields of finance; general counsel; manufacturing; marketing; per sonnel; and research, development and engineering. Operations, including research, production and sales responsibility for groups of products, are carried out by operat ing divisions; staff departments function as service units giving specialized assistance to the operating divisions and to the company as a whole. ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT is responsible for general accounting, sales accounting, budget, cost accounting, cost standards, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and pensions, property accounting, tabulating, accounting research, statistics, internal auditing, billing and sales statistics. Functional responsibility is to the executive offi cer for finance. Director -- Irving C. Smith, controller Assistant Director -- E. J. Cunningham ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT integrates the advertising activities for all divisions in helping sell the company's products and has direct responsibility for all corporate ad vertising. The department reports to the functional vice president for marketing. Director -- William R. Farrell LAW DEPARTMENT handles and supervises all legal and legislative matters. It also includes the functions of the corporate secretary. All outside attorneys, except fo~ patents and trademarks, are employed by the Law Department. Caspari Jr. MEDICAL DEPARTMENT has general direction of all medical activities of the com pany and establishes standard health practices in plants, laboratories and offices. Wheeler PATENT DEPARTMENT is responsible for the preparation, prosecution and defense of all patents, trade-marks, trade names and copyrights. In conjunction with the Law Department, it prepares contracts and licenses incident to such rights and to technical information, whether they are being acquired or conveyed. Director -- J. Evans PERSONNEL RELATIONS DEPARTMENT has staff responsibility for all company personnel matters, including labor relations, salary administration, safety, personnel development, coordination of technical recruitment and employe benefit plans. It shall advise and actively assist all levels of management to maintain and improve the company's standing and reputation with the public. The department reports to the president. Forrestal PURCHASING AND TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT is responsible for supplying the needs of the operating divisions and the staff departments in purchasing, packaging and shipping activities.
