' My dear Hr* Webb* Mr* % c k and I have been interested in arranging to empty the small containers of Ethyl Fluid which are at the Dayton Plant, as soon as possible* Accordingly, we had a conference yesterday in which we discussed the various possible means of doing this* We have decided on a type of equipment which Is exceedingly simple, and which is, at the same time, inexpensive* I am sure that this apparatus can be set up in a very short time, at a cost of not to exceed $33, and that it will work in a perfect fashion without giving us any trouble or any undue exposure* 1 have suggested to M m the advis ability of setting this up at the earliest possible time, .so that the entire job can be clone gradually and without too much necessi ty for hurrying. If it meets with your approval that he should begin oni this, there is no reason I lean see for not setting up the apparatus, and beginning the job almost at once* I will, of course, see to it that the men who work at this job are given careful super vision in order that nothing may come out of this work* The one difficulty will be the disposal of the small cans* I think this can be accomplished best by dumping;them into a kerosene bath, lift ing them out with tongs, `and conveying them while still wet to a point, some distance from the plant# at which point they may be burned in a bonfire of the old packing cases* This bonfire will serve thjs double purpose of permanent disposal of the packing cases and at the same time will provide enough heat to decompose all the lead in the cans, so that they may be either sold or buried which ever seems best. A few days ago I received a notation from Mlttnacht with re gard to care in the use of the word Ethyl, ovr the combinations, Ethyl Fluid and Ethyl Gasoline, I hsve previously called the at tention of all of ray assistants to this matter, and I do not be K 000132 lieve that any abuse of these words lias arisen out of my depart - ment* However, I have again called[their attention to the natter. ,! I have received a copy of a syndicated article by Doctor Evans which appeared in the Chicago Tribute some days ago* I have no doubt you have seen this, for Mr* Jordan told me he was sending a copy of it to your office. It was a request for information as to the relative toxicity of exhaust gas from engines using Ethyl Gasoline on the one hand, and'ordi`nary gas on the other, and giving an incident of a case of poisoning arising, quite ob vlously, from carbon monoxide, Hr. Jordan suggested that I write Doctor Evans, and put him right on :he matter, but I do not think it either necessary or advisable to do so, and I should, not be inclined to take at all seriously the matter discussed in this question and answer* I may be mistaken but I feel that it is better to ignore such things rather than to enter into contro versy* Most of the physicians who write medical requests for the newspapers are not taken very seriously by the reading public and they are practically always smiled at by the medical me* If you have any suggestions to make on this matter, however, I shall be very glad to get them* Yiith kindest regards* : : ' Very truly yours, BAK:GJ * 0001328
