OBJECTIVES
.-.suitor Airborne Asbestos f ib e r at Paco Textures C o rp o ra tio n , San C a rlo s, C a lif o r n ia , a manufacturer of J o in t Cements and Wall Textures.
OPERATION MONITORED
Personal breathing zone and environmental samples were c o lle c te d October 17, 1973 during and a fte r the a d d itio n of SG-210 to a w all te xtu re . The bagger operator fo r th a t batch was a lso monitored. The required number of SG-210 bags were placed on a platform a d jo in in g the dry powder b le n d er. Bags were picked up, s l i t and dumped into the blender
one by one.
EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE
Sampling and dust counting were c a rrie d out in accordance with OSHA Regulation 1910.93a, u sin g the Bayer, Zummalde and Brown method for counting asbestos fib e rs by phase c o n tra st microscopy (Bureau of O ccupational Safe ty and H ealth, Feb. 1969).
Battery-powered a ir pumps (M .S.A. type) c a lib ra te d to 2 li t e r s per minute were used to
c o lle c t personal breathing zone and environmental samples on m i.llipore membrane f i l t e r s of 0.8 micron p o ro sity.
F ib e r counting was performed on a V ic k e r ' s phase c o n tra s t microscope u t i li z in g a Porton r e t ic le fo r s iz in g and f i e l d d e fin it io n .
TEST RESULTS
Reported as fib e rs gre ater than 5 microns in length per cu b ic centimeter of a ir sampled. A fib e r is defined as a m ate ria l having an aspect r a t io g re a te r than 3:1-
INTERPRETATION
The O .S.H .A . re g u la tio n s have been establish ed w ith a lim it of 5 fib e rs g re a te r than 5 m icrons in length per c u b ic centim eter of a ir sampled on a time weighted average (TWA). The' formula C|T| + C2T 2 + CnTn d escribes time weighted average where C = f ib e r count in
. T
fib e r s / c c and T = tim e. For example the dry powder blender operator' s exposure fo r t h is p a r t ic u la r batch in clu d in g bagging would be: (3 .5 ) (14) + (0 .3 ) (46) + (1 .0 ) (30) _ 92.8
I .0 fib e r s / c c TWA.
4 + 46 + 30
90
T h is example should not be confused w ith an 8 hour time weighted average which would be based on the number of batches per day as wel I as times o f zero and near zero exposure.
