Depreciation P oikyi In general: v 1 Depreciation ie computed on th e basis of amortizing the undepreciated cost of each property unit over its estim ated remaining useful m e. Group m ethods and group lives are applied by the domestic companies to certain classes of assets having minor unit values, and by certain of the foreign sub sidiaries to all depreciable assets. Depre ciation of railroad properties is computed a t rates established by the Interstate Com merce Commission. The straight-line method has been applied to all depreciable assets. Depletion of tim ber properties is provided on a cost basis a t rates computed annually by dividing unrecovered cost by estimated recoverable quantities. Depletion of timber Is credited direct to th e asset accounts. It is not practicable to state the depre ciation rates in use. The cost of maintenance, repairs and re newals is charged to operating expenses. Additions and betterm ents are capitalized.
Accumulated depreciation applicable to properties retired or otherwise disposed of is cleared from the accounts, and gains and losses on sales of properties are Included in income.
While Revenue Act of 1962 provided fo r a credit agalsist taxes equal, in general, to 7% of cost of machinery and equipment pur chased a fte r Dec, 31, 1961, th e Revenue Act of 1964 elim inated both retroactively and prospectively, the requirement for reducing the depreciation base by amount of invest m ent credit realized, and full am ount of 1964 credit has therefore been applied as a re duction of provision for Federal income tax. In 1963, 48 percent o r $949,000 of th e 1963 in vestment credit was included in earnings, and the rem ainder was treated as deferred taxes, The $1.5 m illion residue of investm ent credits deferred In prior years was restored to earn ings in 1964 through a reduction in th e ta x provision, A provision of $1.6 m illion was m ade fo r U. S. taxes w hich m ay become payable in event accum ulated earnings of certain of the consolidated foreign subsid iaries are repatriated. The net effect of these tw o unusual item s on 1964 earnings was nominal.
In 1965, domestic . companies changed methods of accounting for depreciation with result that reported earnings for the year w ere increased by $8.1 m illion before tax ($4.2 m illion a fte r provision fo r deferred taxes). In prior years, most fixed assets ac quired a fte r 1953 w ere depreciated by m eans of an accelerated method first permitted for ta x purposes b y Revenue Act of 1954. The straight-line method was applied to all depreciable assets in 1965 and w ill be used fo r fu tu re additions. N et book values of assets on books a t Dec. 31. 1964. a re being depreciated over their remaining useful lives. All depreciation of domestic and foreign subsidiaries is now reported on basis of straight-line method.
General Notes
The consolidated financial statem ents in clude the accounts of all active subsidiaries except two B razilian subsidiaries, which have been excluded because of currency in stability and exchange retrictions in the re cent past, and four m inor German subsidi aries. Considered in the aggregate, the ex cluded subsidiaries are not m aterial in rela tion to consolidated assets or revenues.
